The front passenger seat on my 2002 Citroen Berlingo does not fold flat, if it did I would be able to get my tandem cycle inside.

Does anyone know if the seat can be altered to fully recline or alternatively is there a reclinable (if thats a word) seat that I could replace it with.

Thanks

Clive

See my post about the Helton carrier. I wouldn't carry a tandem in the car if I could avoid it. In the event of a rear-end collision you could easily be skewered by something metallic.

Is there a suitable roof rack fitment? We regularly used to transport "normal" mountain bikes to and from muddy places in our estate cars. Doesn't leave a lot of room for anything else though and makes a royal mess of the inside of the car.

Last year I bought a rack and three bike carriers for the roof and it is just so much more convenient. Took them like that to the south of France last Summer no probs. It did rather do for the mpg though. Down from 45 to 31 ! I guess lifting a tandem on to a high roof might be a challenge athough I believe you can get fancy self loading racks which sort of lift the bike from the side of the car.

In the thread on loadspace dimensions I linked to the Helton carrier, which is good for tall cars because the bike lies flat:

I use one of these--no other connection with the maker.

That's a good bit of kit Baskerville.

Note to self..... "read other posts properly in future"

Of course the best car for carrying tandems is a hydraulically-suspended Citroen. Drop the car, lift on the bike, raise the car again.

Whenever we are on a biking expedition I take my tools in one of those polypropalene tool boxes which is about 18" long by about 10" tall. Makes a handy step when loading the bikes.

Being 5'8" and trying to lift 4 bikes onto the roof of a Seat Altea XL - I have to always take a 2 step foldaway thingy to reach the bikes, especially the 2 bikes on the inside!

And as Humph says, hammers the fuel consumption.

Hi Clive, I wonder of you ever got an answer to your message or gound the answer elsewhere? I notice that none of the original repliers actually talked about the seat itself, they just suggested you do something else.

I've just got a lovely 2002 Berlingo forte and I too would prefer the front seat or seats to recline properly. So I'm wondering the same thing. I've done lots and lots of internet searching, forums etc and found nothing to help.

It's a long shot asking you this because of the age of the message but I thought it worth a try.

Thanks

I had a similar problem when I needed to transport 6' long fence panels. Took the single back seat out (it unbolts easily) and slid the front seat as far forward as poss - a bit inconvenient but no extra cost. Short sighted of Citroen not to have reclining seats - difficult to have a nap on long journeys sitting bolt upright so hope newer models have been upgraded. Otherwise delighted with mine - also 2002 model.
