1999 1.6 heater fan - maximus
Hi, the four speed fan for heat and A/C has ceased to work on it's first 3 speeds the 4th speed blasts away merrily. But, when trying the fan on the first 3 speeds.with the engine running the car engine speeds up slightly - it's as if power is being drawn. Also, the A/C will come on on the dead speeds. Many thanks for any advice.

Sounds like the all too common problem of the resistor pack has failed. This is the usual cause of the fan speeds only working on the highest setting on 99% of all cars.

Thank you D.D. Generally speaking do you know if the resistor pack can be obtained, or is it a case of whole new assembly.

Found this via google:- first hit pointed to a previous post on this site - (perhaps I should have used the forum search - lol) Looks like you can just buy the pack on its own.

Thank you. I phoned Nissan dealer earlier and they said about £32. 10 minutes later they phoned back and said sorry, part has been changed and it's now £42. they gave impression that there was a weakness with original part and therefore it had been modified.

Very common fault on Nissans. Have replaced on our Micras and Primeras.
I fixed the last one.

The resistor card has a 'blob' on it.
This is solder that acts as a thermal fuse (I believe).

Scratch either side of the blob with sharp screwdriver/knife to expose clean copper.
Keep adding solder until the 2 sides meet.

I did this over a year ago in our Micra and it still works on all speeds.

You will find the resistor in the passenger footwell behind the glove box towards the side of the car.
Remove 6? way connector (clip to release) and 2 x 10mm/crosshead screws.

Thank's P 97. I'll try that when I get a chance.

Just to say thanks to P97 and DD. I managed to fix it as per P97 instructions. Thanks, it's very satisfying when a fix goes right. Also saving £40+ is an added bonus.

Nissan parts prices have become a joke.

Spot on, you don't even need to remove the glove box on the old Almera, just get in the passenger footwell, unscrew the two screws and remove the resistor card. I just mended ours, (rusted through on one of the lines) only to knock the solder off replacing the card back in the slot, redid the solder and then protected it by covering the card with insulating tape. I didn't see a blob of solder on the card but the break in the line pitted with rust was obvious, just cleaned it back to bright metal & soldered a line over it. Ours is a 1.4 98 Almera

>>protected it by covering the card with insulating tape.

Might not be a good idea, as it probably gets quite warm!
