Does anybody know the law in relation to tinted windows on vehicles (side windows and windscreen)?
|
Look it up on VOSA - basically tinting of the windscreen and the front side windows is not permitted.
Yeah, loads of people say it is but the requirement for (I think) 90% of light to pass through means that any extra tint on the screen would make it illegal.

HI.
I had this carried out by a company on a black puma i owned.
the front side windows can be tinted. but only by a slight amount....if you go for a "limo/pimp" type tint, it WILL fail an MOT and the police can stop you and make you peel it off before letting you travel on your way.
the rear and rear side windows can be as dark as you want...but also take care as if you go to dark on the back window reversing in the dark will be impossible....
your only allowed to put a little strip of tint film on the main front window at the top...thats your lot...
its nice to have done, but also beware than my insurance company loaded me 5% ....that was the same percentage as when i put zetec alloy wheels on a LX mondeo....
is it really worth the cost (£250 for the puma) and increased insurance, plus any roadside hassles in you go to dark with the tints.....and of course if you only tint the back windows it makes your car look like a van....IMO....
and decent window tinting company can advise you what to do, as of course they don't want to get into trouble themselves with the police for fitted non-legal tints...

My brother has a Fiesta van for work. It's black with alloys and fog lamps. Looks quite smart and at a quick glance, looks just like the car version with pimp glass.

AFAIK windscreens must be 75% transmission, front sides 70% transmission, and that's how most cars with tints come out of the factory. The light transmission figures are shown in the 'labels' on the windows. As a result, in most cases, any additional tint on the factory windows screen or front side windows is not legal.
