Hi all,I'm new to this site, having read for a long time but never participated.
I,ve been looking for a smallish auto for a while and have recently bought a low mileage, one owner,fsh,1.6 Corolla auto,05 plate.Although its a nice car i must admit to having a few reservations already?!
Firstly I have seen reports from HJ and elsewhere re potential heavy oil consumption with these engines, have asked several Toyota dealers with varied responses!A few questions pls for anybody who has one of these,
Is this bore liner problem common, does it relate to age or engine number sequence?
Seems to be more tyre noise than i would like,or am i being over fussy?
Any general impressions from owners would be nice?...thanks.

Oil consumption does seem to be an issue, best to check weekly and top up if required. Road noise seems to be common on Japanese cars but doesn't usually signify anything serious.
Reliability wise and quality of engineering usually superb on Corollas. Good dealers too.

I have no knowledge of the Corolla auto, but my wife`s `04 1.6 manual gearbox Corolla has covered 70k.with no problems apart from a packed -in screenwash pump.
Oil consumption is still negligable, and the poor thing gets revved up from cold most days. Excellent cars!

I had a manual 2 litre diesel in which I did 30k miles taking it to 40k. Absolutely no problems, but I did find the front tyres noisy but significantly better when I put a new set of michelins on all round courtesy of Costco and their special offers they have from time to time. I found it fine for just me, but a little cramped with passengers/luggage so traded it.

Hi Phil,
I would say out of about 600 Corolla that I have bought and sold over the last 5 years I have had about 3 engines replaced for the bore liner problem.
If the car has proper Toyota history I seem to recall that Toyota will cover any bore liner problems even if the 3 year warranty is out.
Just keep an eye on the dipstick (like the manual advises but nobody seems to bother to these days)
The more common problem is the inlet manifold which can rattle like hell due to the innards working loose..... check it by putting ear close to the top of the engine and gently blipping the gas to about 2000 revs (handy if you have a helper)
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your info, having put some miles on the car over the weekend it has now grown on me!
Apparently the oil consumption problem can occur with this model but only a low percentage
are affected. As for tyre noise,it is somewhat noisier than my previous car...good old Renault
Laguna!..but exceptable.
"niceguyeddy",thanks for your help,600 Corolla,s sold!...do you specialise in this model or are an enthusiast?
Phil.

Hi Phil,
I am a Toyota dealer.

Hi Eddy,
As per your experience,I,m informed by my local Toyota dealers that these engines can have these problems but approx only "1 in 300".It does not seem to be mileage related,so it begs the question,if you are unlucky, the car is six yrs old,say 40,000 mls,you could require new short engine!
Would Toyota be sympathetic towards this?
I,m actually new to Toyota as you may have gathered!...I bought this car purely on price/condition etc and because it was automatic.
In your experience, and others perhaps, are these cars as good as there reputation?
Do you actually like them as well as selling many of them?

Oil consumption seems to be an issue on the 1.8 Avensis petrol also - not sure if the same one is used in the Corolla but I believe it is in the Corolla Verso. I thought Japanese petrol engines were supposed to be 'perfect'?
