Got a1.7 td escort. On a few occasions especilly after parked up with engine running or raining , the revs just go up as if you had your foot on the throttle full pelt. It chucks out a lot of smoke , it only last a few seconds. Any suggestions.
Assume its a 97 reg from the R designation in the subject line - accordingly tweaked

Any other symptoms (poor fuel economy, lack of power etc)?

How many miles has it done? If its high mileage and the engine is worn, it could be running on crank case oil fumes. The usual cause of increasing revs is air leaking into the fuel supply, but that normally only results in a modest increase in revs.

no other symptoms maybe a puff of smoke on start up. if i rev it up realy high at start it do sometimes chuck out black soot. mileage is only 65,000 dont realy use the car much. otherwise goes really well and i think miles per gallon ok.

If it has electronic engine management, the only other thing I can think of is the throttle pot.

These are all mechanical with a traditional accelerator cable and linkage on an old school diesel injection pump.
It sounds like engine oil or unmetered diesel is getting in to the intake on occasion, but why this should be intermittent, I don't know. Some of these had a problem with a boost diaphragm splitting in the pump which would cause the revs to surge like this, but this gives other symptoms as well (gutless performance and noticeably worse mpg).

dont know if this is anything to do with it. i had a leaking diesle pipe at the front of the engine and had that renewed , i think its since then the car hasnt seemed right(maybe coincident) . there was lots of oil in the engine when i bought it a year ago and i had some drained off but that seems to be fine so far.

Either may be a factor. Excessive engine oil could possibly be causing engine runaway or there may be an air leak on the fuel system where the pipe was replaced.

Yes thanks for the reply . I will look into that one.
