02 1.4 Headlight masking - A Ferguson
I have an 02 Reg Fabia 16v Elegance. I want to mask the headlights for a trip to France next week-end. The handbook says cover the area of the glass which is marked with diagonal hatching. The glass on the headlights of my vehicle does not have an hatching. Can anyone tell me which area should be masked?

Point your vehicle at a garage door or brick wall and play!!!

I shouldn't bother. Very few seem to. If you are really worried just make a couple of artistically shaped elongated triangles from a roll of black tape and stick them on one side......or the other....of each lens.
The main thing is to watch the speed limits - that's your most likely penalty. Rural motorways are OK if your going with the fast flow, but they lurk on ordinary roads with speed guns.

If you've got plastic headlight lenses, be very careful what you stick on them. Previous posts on here have mentioned the glue from the tape *can* damage the lenses.

Other previous posts on here have also suggested just turning the headlight height adjust on the dashboard down to its minimum setting.

"I shouldn't bother" should never have appeared on this forum. If your headlights blind an oncoming driver, you could br morally and legally responsible for someone's death. Masking headlamps is quite simple. Normal car headlamps have parabolic reflectors. This means that the dipped light comes from the part of the lamp that is furthest away from the side of the road where the light falls. If you have a UK vehicle and you are going to drive in Europe, you must mask the top of the driver's side of each lamp. Electricians' tape works very well - you will need several strips to cover the full area, but you will have plenty left for future trips. Costs about 50p at any electrical store - a small price to pay for a clear conscience - and to avoid the possibility of a long stay in a foreign jail.....! Drive safely.

Just turn them down to their lowest setting you will have no problems, look at the cars on the ferry very few bother with headlamp adjusters.Like as already stated watch your speed in France and learn the law about overtaking on a dual carriageway when passing a exit/entry point favourite points for being pulled.I have never heard of anybody getting pulled for wrong headlamps alone normally its speeding and then they check other things but people forget to tell you that.

I shouldn't bother is a route to trouble. I've been driving to France for 30 years and have always bothered, it is the law and there is no need to invite trouble from French police. (or any other country police)

If they do stop you for something like this, next they might check your GB sticker, first aid kit, warning triangle, reflective jacket (in door pocket not boot) as well as tyres, paperwork etc. Why take a risk for such a silly 10 minute job?? Just because some drivers don't does mean they have to be copied.

I use the brick wall method suggested earlier, and electrical masking tape, or for longer trips I have some beam benders and use them, making sure the light is diffused as I fit them - brick wall is excellent for this too. I have Xenons and seems to work fine!

When you say Xenons do you mean HID's. If you have HID's beware that masking them then cause sonsiderable overheating of the reflector, that is why headlight washers are fitted to all factory HID's. Regards Peter

I would't take the change either, you wouldt be stopped for not having headlamps deflectors .But if you are in a accident it would be taking into account not worth it.
