New cars to automatically avoid collisions? - FotheringtonThomas
"Robotic car which avoids collisions unveiled" - from "The Daily Telegraph:

OK, so it's not yet a car.

"(snip) Mr Ando added: "Electric vehicles have wheels that can move at various angles and so with this technology installed, the possibility of quickly escaping a crash or avoiding an obstacle increases."

It seems to me that there may be significant issues with this technique!

Yes, for me, the real problem is that we would still have some driver input, and so, it's difficult to assign where the responsibility lies if there were a crash.

The sooner driver input is reduced to simply typing in a postcode, the better.

It doesn't need a driver
For his inputs and corrections;
It sees the hazard shaping up
And flees in all directions.

Looks more like a robotic dog than a car to me........

Lud - after reading your little verse, I wonder, were you Frank Spencer in a past life?

Bearing in mind that old women come in all ages and both sexes, I still say you'll get hit by some old lady driving a 1989 Astra.

New cars to automatically avoid collisions? - L'escargot
"The split second it detects an obstacle, it will instantly change direction by turning its wheels to a right angle or further to avoid collision."

At what speed would it be capable of "turning its wheels to a right angle or further"? Only at a very very low speed I opine. And doing so wouldn't prevent a collision with a car coming towards it. It would merely spin in a circle!

Doesn't the recently released Volvo XC60 already have a low-speed collision avoidance system?
Although I believe it merely stops the car, it doesn't set off in the opposite direction.
