I have often read on this forum that one should continue using an old reliable car until it is dead. What are the signs that that a car needs to be inevitably replaced?

I would say death of engine, gearbox or structure ie beyond economic repair. Restored cars are often described as brought back from the dead. The newest cars I would also include electrics in that list.

>>beyond economic repair.
I'm not sure what this phrase means. I suppose it means different things to different people at different times.
Or, rephrasing, during times of riches and profligacy, like the last 30 years or so, cars will have been scrapped which might otherwise be repaired in more austere times.
