I did my initial driver training whilst in the forces.

The first ever car I drove was an (1970's) Escourt Estate.

Upon learning the core basics and spending many ours driving around a disused airbase near Beverley East Yorkshire - I was then put in to a Bedford 7.5t and let loose on the roads! I took my dual car & HGV 3 test in this vehicle.

I then progressed from there to HGV 2 evetually on to HGV 1 vehicles taking a dual HGV 1 + 2 test.

I have also taken & passed my motorcycle, PSV and tracked vehicles licences but you don't get many employment opportunities for tank drivers in civvy street do you?!

First lesson (on my 17th birthday) - a mark 1 Nissan Micra. It was so nasty I changed schools immediately to one which had a brand new mark 2 Mitsubishi Colt, in the days when a Colt was Escort/Golf sized rather than a supermini. Went on to pass my test in that, but also learnt in my Mum's Mark 3 Escort 1.6 Ghia. I remember thinking that Escort was the dog's danglers.

The favoured vehicle of the driving school from which I received instruction was the Nissan Micra Mark I.

After passing my test I continued learning to drive in various Ford Fiestas (Mark 2 and 3).

I'm not quite sure at what point the learning process finished, and I could say that I knew how to drive, but I like to think that after 19 years of driving since passing my test, I've got there - though my wife doesn't always appear to be convinced.

1956 Ford 100E Anglia. 3-speed gearbox with no synchromesh on Ist gear. The car wouldn't go below 20 mph in 2nd so dropping below that speed meant you had to try to get into 1st on the move the best way you could ~ and the instructor didn't teach me how to double de-clutch. I failed my first test (after 12 lessons) for going across crossroads (very few stop lines in those days) too fast in 2nd when I really should have been in 1st. Changed to a 4-speed Morris Minor with a different instructor and passed with no problem after only another handful of lessons.

Driving school car was a Mk1 Fiesta which felt like a Rolls Royce compared to my Dad's Maxi HL in which I drove my first tentative miles and thereafter practiced in.

I remember my first driving lesson in the Fiesta being surprised by the precision of the gearchange, the lightness of the steering and the fact that you could feel the biting point of the clutch.

The Maxi was truly awful to drive but at least gave me the opportunity to learn the art of double declutching at 17 as the synchromesh on 2nd gear had failed. Hey it was 18 months old, these things don't last forever, was more or less the response from the BL "Service" Department.

Had lessons to pass the test in a BSM Metro (think had 12-13 lessons).

Weekends and evenings Dad taught me to drive in mums B reg Polo (which became my car after passing the test as Dad was forced into a company car).

As soon as I passed the test Dad took me out in the company car (MG Montego) to get feel of something with bit more power, and what had become Mums Citroen BX diesel.

Swapping between the BX and the Polo was a good learning curve- Polos brakes were appalling on all MK IIs due to conversion from left to right hand drive, where as the brakes on the BX were more like a microswitch- off or on. Is certainly the only car where managed to get smoke coming from the tyres when had to do a sudden stop- and only made that mistake once.

Am not sure if would have passed the test without Dads help- as he noticed several faults my instructor didn't pick up on such as riding the clutch whilst reversing, and looking at the gear stick occasionally. Dad also spent much more time on positioning the car- but nearly came to blows on many occasions during the first few outings.

Very amusing thread!

If I remember right, the car I took my road test and previous instruction in was some sort of late Seventies/early Eighties Chevrolet Impala, 2-door sedan (this was spring of 1981). Once I had my licence, I went out and bought a 1976 Plymouth Fury four-door for $1200. That was one SOLID car--went 140,000 miles before rust brought it to an untimely end in 1989. MOPAR's 318 V8 was an extremely reliable engine for this car--in fact, my current aircraft carrier on wheels has the same 318. Floor it!!!!!!!!!

My mum's Morris 1100, in 1965/6.

Re the Kadett sub-thread - for some doubtless excellent reason GM in the late 70s / early 80s elected to sell Opels in competition to their almost identical Vauxhall counterparts - the front of the cars was the main difference. The first Kadett was the Chevette, as mentioned above, but the next Kadett was the Mark 1 Astra. Then there was the Ascona / Cavalier; Manta / Cavalier coupe; Rekord / Carlton; Monza / Royale coupe - and I can't remember what the Opel version of the Royale saloon was - Diplomat possibly?

OK, I'm a nerd. Enough.

Edit - PS - were they both called Senator?

Had had a few goes in Dads cars over the years on private land, but had my proper lessons in a Mk1 Nissan Micra 1.0.

Memorably, at the start of my first lesson, my instructor told me "I am going to teach you how to pass the driving test, but I am not necessarily going to teach you how to drive."

Thought the Micra was awful, controls were too light IMO. At the time I was going for occasional drives in Dads Mk2 Cavalier 1.8, which was a heavy car in comparison.

I was car mad and passing my test first time was far and away more important to me than passing exams at school.

I took my test in January 1990.
Dad's car - C reg Escort 1.3L.
Driving school cars - E reg Nissan Micra then brand new G reg Nissan Micra (37 miles on the clock!)

On the day of my 17th birthday, my dad took me to an empty industrial estate in Letchworth and taught me how to make his car go, stop and turn.

The day after, same industrial estate for half an hour then out around the town once and 2 miles home.

On the third day he had arranged to drop a work colleague at Heathrow airport. I drove the 20-odd miles to the guy's house near Dunstable, dad did the motorway bit from there to Heathrow and back as far as the A414 near St Albans - then I drove up the old A1 route (Hatfield - Knebworth - Stevenage - Letchworth) which took about an hour but felt like an eternity.

My first driving school lesson was on the fourth day. The instructor sat me in the passenger seat and started driving whilst he asked me if I'd had any experience. 200 yards later he stopped and we swapped seats, and at the end of the 1 hour lesson he gave me the test application form and told me there was a twelve week waiting list, I should send it off straight away because I'd be ready by then.

He was right, I passed first time aged 17 years 11 weeks.

And yes, I did everything over the next few years that you'd expect, apart from bend a car so badly it couldn't still be driven. Still haven't in fact. (Touch wood)

A 1971 Volvo 144 saloon. Coleman's mustard colour with a black vinyl roof. Stainless steel exhaust gave it a lovely growl.

Handbrake was on the RHS of the drivers seat, gave me a scare on test. When I pulled up and just as the car stopped I was in the habit of putting it out of gear with my left hand and putting the handbrake on with my right, no hands on the wheel. On pulling up to do the 3 point turn on test the front left wheel hit some snow in the gutter and I have this picture of the steering wheel spinning, probably only went 20-30 degrees, don't think the examiner noticed as I passed

Just remembered another piece of trivia about the yellow 144. When Dad had it it didn't have the vinyl roof. He traded it in at the the then main Edinburgh Volvo dealer ( Buchanans ? ) who were located near Balgreen. The car was in their compound awaiting sale when the place was broken into and some cars were damaged with paint or something being thrown around. The paint on the roof of the Volvo was affected and the garage manager decided that the cheapest fix was to put a black vinyl roof on.

Still, I managed to pass my test first time after only seventeen lessons so both him and my instructor must have been doing something right!

Triumph Herald 1963 - what a turning circle, but didn't tyres (and clutch, quietly!) squeal on full lock

Driving School had Fiesta (this was in late 1981) which was fine. Day of the driving test Fiesta broke down so they sent me out in a RWD Escort and I had 15 minutes extra to practice. Fortunately I passed first time.

What a lot of "youngsters" you are!!! I started to drive in 1956 when I bought a wreck of a 1949 Standard 12 saloon during the Suez political crisis, when holders of Provisional Driving Licences were lawfully authorised to drive without an accompanying qualified driver.

The Coventry bombsite garage where I bought the car ( mind you - most of Coventry was a bombsite then, since very little rebuilding had occurred since the blitz) dumped it outside my RAF Married Quarter front door. I then set off that evening round the Warwickshire country lanes and somehow driving just came naturally (I tell myself)

However, since I was then in an RAF post requiring the holder to drive a car ( and I quote "Cars up to a maximum speed of 60 mph", I was attached to a three week course at RAF Weeton (near Blackpool) where under the tutoring of a civilian instructor, two "pupils" shared the use of a Standard Vanguard saloon, complete with a three forward gears steering column gear change. It was quite a powerful beast for its day!

After "qualifying" on a nearby airfield to drive on public roads, tuition was from 08.30 to 12.30 and 1.30 to 4.30 pm five days a week for some 2.5 weeks. I saw more of Blackpool than I care to remember - up and down the Garstang Road was my favourite hate, I remember!

I can hear you saying "how could anyone fail to pass the test " but some did! Fortunately, I didn't.
