When I worked near Leeds (but never ventured into Leeds itself) I frequently heard the term "Leeds gyratory" mentioned on traffic reports on the radio. What exactly is the "Leeds gyratory"?

The Armley Gyratory - it's the main roundabout just off the city centre. If you enter or leave by the M621 you will use it. Find the A643 on Mapslive (or search for "Bruce Lawn", Leeds) - it leaves the M621 at junction 2 then heads north. The large roundabout at the northern end is the Armley gyratory. A problem here gridlocks the whole of Leeds.

We also have the Leeds Loop - a very complicated inner city one way system - miss your junction and its 5 miles to get back to where you started!

Is that it's official name, or just what it's called locally?

That's not the Armley Gyratory, it's the Legless Gyratory.

It's Yorkshire isn't it. They get so excited by new fangled things like roundabouts they have to come up with fancy names.

Can you imagine the commotion when they get things like electricity and carpets.

If we had that in our town we'd call it the outer ring road!

IIRC on the road from Lewes into Brighton there's a large roundabout (in effect) referred to as a "gyratory" locally.

I've always assumed it was because it's so large (it has shops and whatever in the central area) that it's called this and not a roundabout.

The Hanger Lane gyratory (A40 / A406 west of London) has been called that for years, but any resemblance between traffic speeds and anything gyrating is pure coincidence.
