I have a 2.0 hdi 406, suddenly began struggling to engage in gear, garage said new clutch, was fitted today. but now the engine management light stays on with the message appearing on the onboard display "Engine Anti Pollution System Defective". The garage checked the car over & over to see if any sensor/cable was left unplugged but everything was fine. They dont have a diagnostic machine so cant diagnose the code. Mechanic thinks its becase of replacing the clutch and the code just needs re-setting or clearing from ECU but he hasnt equipment. Gonna take it to a diagnostic place on Monday but any clues here to what it might be?

What's the engine code? Does it have a FAP system?

engine no is DYPC4008414
Not sure if it is a FAP System, where would I find this out?
Also I had the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter changed at the garage at the same time when they changed the clutch.
The Peugeot Handbook says "If the Engine diagnostic warning light is lit continuously whilstthe engine is running, this indicates a fault in the emmission control system."

Have a look in the VIN number for the letters RH and then note the next letter - for this engine Y, Z, or S. There's a specific reason for thinking it may be an S.
The light is just a generic warning that there's a code stored; ditto the message.

I have found the PDF document (link below) on google which indicates that the RHZ engine model is affected by the FAP system but it says for 407's and not 406's.
If this is the problem the document explains that the Particulate filter system requires a reset, something to do with the diesel additive running low, should be serviced every 40 to 50k, my car has 91k so it may be due a service? could this be the problem?

oh and something else which might be of relevance, the date & time on the onboard display just flashes consistently and is reset it Jan 2000..Cant get the remote to change it, i am guessing it is doing this because the Engine management light is on? and will be normal once the fault code is cleared?

RHZ is good - no FAP system; [not an engine used on the 407?]
As it's not an RHS; then my suspicions about the FAP pressure sensor under the battery tray don't apply - they often get damaged during clutch renewal.
As they would have had to replace the dual-mass flywheel with the clutch; maybe they knocked the crank sensor getting it off or something? A code-read will tell.
The fault-code shouldn't affect the display; that may cause a code if the BSI software has corrupted though.

I dont believe the dual mass fly wheel was replaced, ive seen the recipt for the clutch was about £110 plus the filters etc came to £160 all in, and then labour on top of that, so unless the duall mass flywheel came with the cluctch Kit I dont think it has been replaced

A DMF is around £500; nobody would be mad enough to change a clutch and not replace the DMF as well - would they?
Your symptom sounded more like DMF failure than a clutch fault anyway.

i dont know would they?
since ive had the car since the clutch change th gears feel ok but there are times when I find that it sticks during a gear change. I guess this is hat you get for using a cheap mechanic.
Also My mechanic said that the bearings had gone on the clutch when the checke the old clutch.

If its an 8 valve 2.0 Hdi it doesn't have a DPF.
