The recent thread about rusty KAs has got me worried. We have a 2007 Focus which is proving extremely pleasing to own. But will it rust like a KA?
Also what about the S-Max?
Thanks

I'm not an expert but I think the problem was that early Kas weren't galvanised, whereas more recent Fords like yours have been.

When I sold my mk2 Mondeo (X reg) earlier this year, the only hint of rust was some minor bubbling from untreated stonechips on the leading edge of the bonnet. Door bottoms, sills, floorplan and arches were totally unblemished. This was a high miler, driven long distances in all weathers, and washed twice a year if it was lucky.

Avant is correct. The Ka was not galvanised. I'm pretty sure all other current Fords are. We have 4.5 year old Ka with a little bit of rust under one door. Cured or perhaps more accurately, stemmed with a bit of DIY for now. Lud's oil in the doors trick seems to help. Otherwise, great wee car.

Make sure the annual body check is done and stamped in the service book. If not the warranty will be void. The body check is around £20 or there about.
My company lease Mondeo had rusting rear doors (some have all doors, bonnet and hatch/boot rusting too) but Ford could ignore any warranty as the lease company did not pay for the check - saves £20 per vehicle but with hundreds of thousands worth the risk too them.

I was looking around a car supermarket yesterday and noticed a nice Mondeo TDCi zetec in Nightfire red. It was an 04 with slight bubbles at the bottom of both rear doors. My intention was to get an Alfa 156 and but the Mondeo took my eye for value and equipment.
Im sticking with my Alfa search as I cant be bothered worrying about rust!!!

I've heard it said Focuses have 'thin paint'.
Only subjective, but looking at my 2002 Focus, I tend to agree.
Ford don't put on a teaspoonful more than they have to, but I've had no problems with rust so far.

My 2003 Focus has had a Body and Paint check (and the book stamped accordingly) every year as part of the yearly service, with no charge being shown on the invoice.

Snowman,
All Foci have an 11 year body warranty as long as (previous posters have said) you have the bodywork checked at each service.

As the originator of a "rusty Ka" thread (perhaps the very one referred to by the OP), this is of great interest to me.
My Ka has a full Ford Service history, but the annual body check has never been stamped in the service book. I have taken it to my local Ford dealer in order to ensure that everything is done properly. BUT they never once asked if I wanted the Body and Paint check done when I brought it in for servicing. I assumed that it would be done as a matter of course - and, more to the point, I would have assumed that if it was not done as a matter of course, but was an optional extra, then one would have been asked by the dealer if one wanted it done.
(If they charge extra for it, I would assume they would offer it to customers - since dealers usually encourage customers to part with cash for any extra that they can sell. If they don't charge extra for it, I would assume it would be done as a matter of course.)
Am I being stupid? Or naive?
I wonder what proportion of Ford owners (or, for that matter, owners of any car) who take their car to main dealers for servicing, request that the Body and Paint check is done?

"Have you ever seen a rusty Focus I havn't. "
I have seen some very early ones (T,V,W etc) with rust starting on the rear wheel arches and the bottoms of the rear doors (5 door). As these are 8-9 years old now then maybe its to be expected on badly looked after ones.

I've seen some very rusty Fiestas. Some only a few years old.
Focuses seem to be pretty good though. Mondeos can be a bit patchy.
That said, that is nothing to be proud of any more -- you don't actually see that many rusty post-98 Daewoos either, and they're made of tin.

Hello
I have not seen one rusty MK6 fiesta (current range) Ever.
Apparently they do not rust so i have been told.
Are they galvanised etc.
The wifes fiesta is made from good metal.

Our 2000 X reg green Focus had some v minor rust under some of the door seals at the bottom - easily remedied by srewdriver, sandpaper, Kurust and touch-up. Needless to see it never enters a workshop apart from the MoT necessity. [and the obligatory rear wheel bearing which I was foolish enough to attempt myself...don't even think of it unless you have a hydraulic 1000ton press and Mr Universe muscles]
20 notes.....a year....for what?? Body present and correct?!

I can only repeat what I said last Friday. "My 2003 Focus has had a Body and Paint check (and the book stamped accordingly) every year as part of the yearly service, with no charge being shown on the invoice."
It's always been carried out as a matter of course, without me having to request it.
