I can understand them being cheesed off, I'd say they deserve a refund - but where do they get the idea they should get 12 million dollars between 100 people (even accounting for lawyers)?

60 000 x 100 = 6 000 000. 6 000 000 x 2 = 12 000 000. Double damages for intentional deception as a punishment.
