Are you reading Mr. Darling ???
You stick the price of fuel up beyond the price the average man in the street can afford to go to work and pay his bills (including taxes) and theft goes through the roof. What do you think the link is ????

Nice to think he might, but I very much doubt it. Neither him nor the other chump drive (and I understand and fully accept the medical reasons for that in the other one's case), so they have never stood next to a pump watching, with increasing gloom, the £ going up faster than the litres. Quite apart from that, the pair of them display a lack of understanding of real people that is almost pathological and hence they are not, imo, capable of making such a link. Sorry, but there it is.

Funny what becomes worth stealing, isn't it?

There was a thread on here the other day about people going round collecting scrap metal and so it becomes worth stealing. We all have some sort of locking fuel cap and occasionally used to read of fuel siphoning, but now it's like a small business. Supply and demand, innit?

I'd love to see them drill my tank, the resultant explosive decompression of LPG would be quite a sight to behold I imagine! :-)

Credit where credit's due, the FPE (Fuel Price Escaltor) was actually started by the tories in 1993, NuLab just continued with the status quo.

I advised a client of mine not to fit locking caps on his trucks, all is does is cost more to replace not only the stolen fuel but also the damaged/drilled tanks.

My advice to them was to get the drivers to fill up in the morning and leave as little in the tank at the end of the day as possible - the scrotes can't take what aint there!!!!

It happened to me a while back, i was parked overnight in a layby because my driving hours were up, there wasn`t a secure lorry park in the vicinity so i had no choice, woke up to an empty tank and my locking cap was snapped off!!

They've hit in my area too.
But they're mainly targeting Renault Lagunas because they have a plastic fuel tank which are easier to drill into.

They'll be pinching oil from the sump next. Fit a drain plug lock.

A sociologist is probably already studying the evolution of car "nickables".
When petrol was rationed (1940s and almost again in 1973, 2008,...!) out came lockable caps.
The 1980s gave us alloy wheels (locking wheel nuts) and XR3s and Cossies and their massive "following" from joy riders (immobilisers and alarms). In-car cassette players led first to detachable audio units (slightly iffy radio handbag for Fiat owners) and then detachable panels.
And so we're back to petrol! Oh, and airbags, Sat-navs and catalytic converters. So what's next, let me guess... batteries, glow plugs, Xenon lights...? I once had a front indicator stolen from a 10 year old Montego, how pathetic is that?
Final thought - Whatever happened to number-plate-etched-onto-windows "to deter thieves"? Can they be blotted out now, or is the price of new glass just so low relative to the cost of petrol ?!?

"Final thought - Whatever happened to number-plate-etched-onto-windows "to deter thieves"? "

Very good question! I'd like to know too. Were they ever useful?

Etched glass was to prevent the whole car being nicked and is identity changed. The idea being that changing the windows would potentially make it prohibitively expensive for any potential ringer.

A bus company in Northampton has been suffering alot of diesel thefts.
They did catch some people in the act but of course, the police attending werent trained to climb the fence they escaped over. Gotta love our BIB.

BIG problem locally.
I've had to replace the front indicator housing on the Opel twice, after tealeaves prised off the plastic cover and removed the lightbulb. the cover was discarded goodness -knows-where.
Apparently the vermin use the bulbs to smoke 'tik' (Crystal meth).
Similarly, they also nick the bulbs from traffic lights for the same purpose, so the local council (ie us ratepayers) are now coughing up for LED bulbs to eb fitted.

It's still available. Google for "car glass etching".

EH !? You mean I was cheated?
I never got an iffy radio handbag with the detachable panel in any of my FIAT cars...Gutted !

And now the media have informed the toe-rags that this is the "in thing" to do this summer, many more will be off drilling tanks and stealing the stuff.....

I'm now waiting for the first toe-rag who drills a tank, petrol catches alight, receives 30% burns and then successfully sues the car owner!

well if your car goes boom and you rush outside to find a burning toerag make sure you get a few good kicks in before the fire brigade arrive

I'm pleased my car is kept in a secure garage (day and night) when it's not being used.
