94 1.6 auto mystery knocking - lazza
Just started up my mothers' 1.6 'Mardi Gras' automatic, because she said it has developed a knocking noise. It is there at idle, and it does increase with engine revs. I've moved it backwards and forwards on the drive just using Reverse and Drive with no additional input from accelerator, and it moves smoothly with no juddering. She hasn't driven it very much in the last 3 months, so that could be why this has developed. Any ideas folks please before it goes to the Peugeot Garage??

Thanks, Mark

Very difficult to say without hearing it. It could be engine wear, piston slap, small end bush or it may be something in the auxiluary belt system. Is it directly related to engine speed, half engine speed or neither?

Worn camshaft and/or cam follower I would guess.
By standing for so long the oil may have drained away completely form the top end of the engine leaving the camshaft dry on start-up.
Also happens when oil and filter changes are neglected.

I had a grub locating screw fail on a 305 which caused the oil feed to the cam followers to be cut off when the shaft moved. Had to replace the camshaft and followers. Expensive!

Thanks ChicksFan. That might well be the cause of the noise. It does sound engine related: tick-tick-tick/clack-clack-clack, not thud-thud-thud.

The local garage have taken it away to have a look this morning, so i've told my mum not to authorise repairs if they diagnose camshaft replacement. It was making a racket when the guy drove off in it.

Thanks, Mark

The garage in the village have had a look and their verdict was 'burnt-out valves and no compression'. I thought that if engine had no compression then it wouldn't be driveable. Does oil starvation or old age do this to an engine so suddenly?
