Does anyone know of any insurers who specialise in newly qualified young drivers? I do not want to spend several hours trawling through the usual price comparison sites if anyone could point me in the right direction.
Many thanks in advance

elephant.co.uk do very good deals at the moment
BUT their quote will be lower if you get redirected from a comparison site (confused.com for instance) as they are then aiming to be more competitive against the rest
they also do a "special" deal of selling 10 months insurance after which THEY will sell a second with one year NCB (ie they are willing to treat 10 months of no claims as 12 months), downside of this is that will stop you shopping around at the one year mark
you can get 12 months cover rather than 10 if you stick to your guns
also excess is pretty high, there is an excess versus premium calculation that you need to do and decide what excess you are happy with before getting quotes
in same situation we ended up with elephant, but as above stuck for 12 months cover, and went via a comparison site to get the cheaper price
but it changes all the time as insurance companies change their prices to attract people they want and price out people they dont

The CIS (Co-Op) used to be quite good for new drivers. Things may well have changed now though.
ps, Was this specifically for a Ford KA, or a general question? I can change it if it's the latter, also over here in discussion it's not compulsory to select make/model of car when you compose your post/question.

The insurance is for a recently acquired '97 KA. In a previous post I had been advised by Mum that daughter would like a Saxo/106. Then she fell in love with the registration number of this black KA!!
Upside is that if it breaks I have no responsibility....my Micra/Skoda Felicia advice was ignored totally.
It is currently insured with Lloyds TPFT circa £1050 which I thought ludicrously expensive and was certain I could find a better deal during the 14 day cooling off period. Now I am not so sure, just grateful I am not starting out as a young driver myself.

hi
have a look at "young marmalade.co.uk"
their car plus insurance rates look ok
female 17 years old
car upto 1400cc £774 fully comp
but as you already have the car there web site states
Please note: If you already have a car and are looking for an insurance quote the above rates do not apply. To obtain a quotation, please call A-Plan on 01865 241441 and mention Marmalade.
Things to note
* This scheme is designed to assist 17 to 25 year old drivers overcome the initial insurance hurdle.
* Parents or guardians will automatically be included on the policy free of charge subject to them having a satisfactory driving record and not being in a restricted occupation or having criminal convictions.
* Minor motoring infringements are acceptable but major infringements such as drink and drug-related offences will not. If in doubt, please ring us on 0845 644 2026.
* This is a fully-comprehensive policy, providing the driver with a 35% no-claims bonus at the end of the year subject to there not being any fault claims.
hope this helps

We used A Plan for our daughter initially and she is still with them as they have been consistently the best quote for her.

Thanks focusman. I just tried ''youngmarmalade'' but after furnishing all details and running it through their computer, they rang me back and would not even give me a quote as their sales guy said they were not competitive, compared to a Lloyds quote of £1050!!
Apparently you have to purchase a car through ''ym'' in order to receive this preferential insurance rate. Silly me thought ''ym'' were an insurance broker.
Looks like its 3 figures spent on the car, and four on the insurance.

Try APlan themselves (we do it by 'phone) rather than marmalade - we dealt with them for daughter and they were by far the best quote (about £700). They could not give us a good deal for our son though!
For our him we took out a multiple car policy with Admiral - one car in my name, one in his - took out his policy initially then agreed to add mine for the last three months of his policy Overall, for both cars, it worked out much cheaper - and that was after he had had an expensive prang. Suggest this to your neighbour as one way to go.
