hi,ive got a a4 tdi ,1998 model ,car wouldnt start ,had ecu reprogramed ,cam belt replaced ,car came back fine .same night car struggled to start noticed a couple of jubilee rings missing around filter whitch i replaced. i left car overnight ,then bumpstarted it ,the car was smokey (white smoke) high revs in second it struggled loads of smoke ,put car into 3 rd,low revs cars fine, now it struggles to start .does ant one know whats wrong its doing my head in!

'had ecu reprogrammed' - what do you mean by this?
Any fault codes? Glow plugs OK? timing correct?
hi thanks for the reply .i had the imobiliser reprogramed to the keys ,the heater plugs work ,car spins over tries to start ,comperations good.,i put a new fuel sender in tank yesterday ,its like its drawing air in ,but all the pipes are tight and got jubilee clips on them,i know it cant be the fuel pump ,cos it works fine ,and when i open a injector ,fuel flys out ?
White smoke is indicative of unburnt fuel, the usual reasons being failure of the glow plugs (at start up only) or low compression, if you are certain that these are OK it sounds as though the pump timing is varying wildly which could be caused by air ingress or a faulty pump or control system.
hi peter. i put a new fuel filter on today ,got it started ,reving fine . ,the pumps ok, i cracked a injector and fuel was spurting out ,,new heater plugs from gsf car parts ,its got to be drawing air in ,FROM SOMEWHERE !
Could be that the pick up pipe in the tank is getting blocked or that the vent in the filler cap is blocked. If you have a solid enough restriction it will suck air in from anywhere, it will also upset the pump as it is controlled largely by the fuel pressure. You could try disconnecting the fuel pipe in the engine compartment and feeding the pipe from a container to try it, or give the pipe to the tank a blast of compressed air.
hi and thanks again peter.the origanal pick uppipe /sender unit ,had muck in it ,i replaced with a new pick up/sender unit ,,l give the pipies a blast with air ,who knows i might be lucky !!!

tried all of them .lines are clean , still not starting
So, since the cam-belt was replaced; it's been hard to start and smoky?
Not difficult to get the pump timing wrong on these - or for a new belt to jump a tooth. Seen quite a few do that around this year.
belts right ,cost me 220 last week for a reprogram of the ecu ,belt timing checked ,whitch was right, man at garage said he got it running ,it ran well engine had loads of power, thats why i dont think its pump ,or could the pump have a intermitent fault ?
Anything is possible; though I'm still puzzled by this expensive ECU "re-program" for what looks very like the normal new belt-jump fault.
What does the pump timing look like on the scanner?
Is there something we are not being told?
What is the background? when did the car last run well?
the car was a spare car i had in garage ,it never realy got used , been in there for around 12 months .the car ran fine in march regulary serviced , put fresh fuel in , its a mystery.car come back running from garage but only for a day
would a pump timing /fuel pump problem show up on the scanner?
would a pump timing /fuel pump problem show up on the scanner?
Yes; the scanner should always be used after fitting a belt as it can display two references that are plotted on a graph to achieve accurate pump timing.
If they are not in the correct alignment; the pump/pulley relationship can be adjusted to compensate.

when the car was running i noticed bottom pulley wasnt running dead true, could this throe the timing out ?
Not normally; but the reason for it being visibly bent could stand investigation.
when car was running ,i looked down at bottom pulley and it was like wobbleing side to side .if that doing that ,its got to throw timing out a tooth ?
If that was the crank pulley and not the A/C compressor pulley; then, if it's that bad, it needs checking fast; the belt could well have jumped.
hi thanks for the advice, ive just been on google search typed in ,audi crankshaft problrms ,thers a okd ad on honest johns ,a golf mkd tdi ,same problem, cars doing same so it looks, sounds like it might be the problem
To prove drain back fill the tank or park the car on an incline with the diesel tank higher than the pump on the engine (a liquid wont run upbank with out external help).
Are you running veggie or another similar substance?
took crank pulley off yesterday ,noticed its worn ,,so looks like it thrown timing out,got new pulley from a mate at vw ,he says its a common fault AUDIS NOWT BUT PROBLEMS!
hi everyone ,cars running fine now ,new problem ,heaterplugs have no power going to them, glow plugs are new ,work fine when teste d
Have you checked fuse 6 under the bonnet? Does the relay click under the dash?
hi again and thanks, whats fuse 6,and where is the glowplug relay
hi ,car struggles to start ,new glowplugs ,but no power going to them ,does any one know where the relay is ,or whys theres no power going to nthe glow plugs ...thanks tomy
As asked in you other thread; have you checked the fuse yet?
there short on car.revs stuck on today ,strong smell of fuel engines knackerd now,im sick of it
fuse is fine.yesterday car ran fine bit of smoke then it revved its nuts off.tried turning off with key ,it did nothin ,kept reving ,loads of smoke
