X18XE-1 VECTRA 1.8SRI T REG 90K

Hi to all on Honest John's forum.

My car has started to run bad after 7 miles from cold when the engine light comes on, or 3 miles if i stop it for 5 mins then start again then it runs bad again, the pattern is always the same. It sounds like its running on 3 cylinders and its struggles to go up hills.

I had hoped it was the yellow/brown wire to earth fault but both of these have a good earth anyway!!!

From what i have read on some forums it might be the crack case sensor, they say its when it gets warm it would then be wrong!!! not sure why!

I would imagin its not cheap for one of these sensors to try one then to find out its not the issue.

Also it looks bad to access and its got one of them silly screw heads.

Does anyone know where the paper clip testing thing is on this car, then if the test shows up as the sensor i would risk buying one.

Thanks for any help

ps up untill now this has been my best car ever.

Diagnostic plug is under the removable cover beneath the handbrake lever. Info on how to perform the paperclip trick:-

www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm

Report back any code(s) that flash up and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

I'm pretty sure the paperclip trick will work on al X series engines, the newer Z series ( roughly 2000 onwards in Astra / Zafira terms) need a proper code reader.

FWIW I'll bet a virtual pint on the crank sensor, although some combinations of ECU and SW will display a crank fault anyway when the engine's not turning, just to confuse the issue.

Thanks to both your replys, i found the connector under handbrake, it does not seem to read out codes when the engine is running, it only does it when turned off with ign on.
But i am going to give it another go in about 5 mins.

Its a 4 code version and i keep getting crank case sensor, MAF, ATS, tank vent valve plus some i might have mis read.

Going to get a clean sheet of paper and a pen and have another go.

X18XE-1

error codes re tested after removing battery for 30mins

0354
0131
0110
0100
0443
0344

On one of the links above it shows the MAF/ATS connector and only the yellow cable is earthed is this ok? no brown cables here.

Any ideas?

I can't get a crank sensor today no one has one in stock, they say its very rare it goes wrong on the X18XE-1 so none are kepted in stock.

So where does the crank sensor come in? No code for that?

The fact that you've got MAF/IAT sensor codes [P0100/0110] on an X18XE1 would make me fit a supplementary earth to the yellow wire anyway. Earth it to the ECU's earth point on it's mounting plate.

The cam sensor wiring wants checking [P0344] and I'd suspect a coilpack for the misfire [P0354] but gently tweak the coilpack's plug terminals first as they lose their spring.

Ignore P0131 for now; with a miss, the oxy sensor's signal will be a right mess.

The EVAP canister purge valve [P0443] should read 25 Ohms disconnected and have a live feed on one terminal in the plug at key-on.

how have you got these codes, with what i mean, paper clip etc
1999 1.8 SRi Running Bad - oriongi
Yes the paper clip method, Topbloke

I have tried the EVAP test that Screwloose as surgested and i got 37ohms and 12v from one of the wires, the other is to earth. Last year i replaced a split jointing tube on the evap which stopped it stalling at road ends/traffic lights etc.

I am going to look tomorow at the other things from Screwloose. Also i will change the plugs while looking at the coilpack.

Thanks for all the help so far will report back tom.

I have changed the plugs and air filter today also cleaned the coilpack and took it for a run, it did 10 miles and no problem, i took it home and left it 5 mins, went back to it and started it again and it started running funny again.

Its seems to be a heat fault, does this point to any of my fault codes, would a cam sensor be effected by heat?

I will have to look at the cam sensor next, and the yellow to earth.

Also not important but i have just noticed my electric windows have stopped the auto up and down both sides, would this be when i removed my battery?
1999 1.8 SRi Running Bad - John S
Yes, the battery disconnect caused the window problem. Close the windows and hold the switches down for 10 seconds to reset the autoclose.

Not sure about cam sensor being the problem. If my Vectra was anything to go by the car would misfire momentarily, usually about 5 miles from cold, put on the ECU light, but continue running cleanly albeit sometimes restricted to 4000 revs. Friend's Vectra had the same fault with identical symptoms.

Coilpack faults are heat-sensitive; if you've tweaked the terminals, I'd be seriously considering replacing it by now - the risk of cat damage is very high.

agree but exspencive guess as would not want to put anything other than genuine on
1999 1.8 SRi Running Bad - oriongi
Thanks for the replys, first the electric windows started to work late yesterday and i will take note about the 10 seconds bit for the future.

I agree about the coil pack and the cost is ok if thats it! I have heared some of the Vauxhall dealer horror storys, even my sister fell for this years ago with a V6 Omega which use to overheat, they never got it working and had to traded it in.

It's heat that does it and soon as the temp goes above 80 on the temp gauge its starts, if it cools down below and i re-start its ok again, i must admit it last longer without the ecotec cover because its slightly cooler. Going to work is ok because its less than 3 miles and it never kicks in running bad.

I will order a coil pack asap and let you know how it get on, Thank you for all your help so far.

Got a coil pack from the local Vauxhall dealers and fitted it and its running perfect.

Thanks to all on this forum i could not have done this without you.
