Anybody any ideas? EG: Air filter's £40-odd! Brake pads £40+. Managed to get an oil filter fo £4 (Microcar £13 + vat & carriage). Thanks in advance.

Chances are that the filter and pads are common to other vehicles. Take both to a local factor i.e. Partco, Halfords etc. They should be able to match it up to filter/ pads fitted to other vehicles. It's likely it'll cost a lot less too.
Hope this helps

Update:
Oil filter £4 max from any spares dealer, tell him the code of the old one. Incidentally there are 2 drain plugs, one back one front of sump, but you don?t see the front one unless you remove the trim.
10/40 oil cheapest at Asda.
Air filter order code VFA315 or equivalent ? they told me it fits a Renault 5. You?ll need to cut the hole bigger to fit over the carb (draw round a plant pot saucer & use a jigsaw), drill a hole for the engine breather tube (19mm, or big drill and waggle it about) and drill 2 holes for the bolts that hold it down. Don?t forget to vac all the bits out before you refit it! It?s thinner than the original so use grommets and penny washers under the hold-down nuts. Cost £10, instead of £40 plus postage for the Lombardini one.

Is it worth the trouble when it will last a couple of years?
