hi just bought an audi A4 1.6 p plate was not runnin very good would sometimes cut out or revs would rise if sittin out of gear since then it has cut out and wont restart any ideas wot it could be ? when tryin to start car it trys but just wont kick in could it be fuel pump ?

Possibly; is there a spark? Can you hear fuel flowing at key-on?

yeah there is a spark cant hear anything when i turn car on

Try a squirt of brake cleaner into the throttle housing and see if it fires on it?

rac tryed that when they looked at car it did fire up for a split second only thing they could do was tow me home lol

none wot so ever tryin to fix this blind just trial and error silly i know dont want to start replacin things if dont have too hence the reason i bought old car as it was cheap

just read some where that if i disconect at fuel filter and turn key if petrol comes through , the pump is fine, does that mean the relay would be ok as well ? and would most likely then be the fuel filter that would need changed ? is that correct ? lol only thing i know about cars is where the petrol goes in pmsl, thanks for ure help

If the pump is working; you can usually hear it for a couple of seconds at key-on.
There are many different versions on that year; what is the three-letter engine code for your engine - it's on the cam-belt cover label. [Something like ADP or AHL.]
