Hi i have an s reg 1.9 td 406, 100k on the clock with an erratic idle it seems to be variating between 1k and 1.1k when the engine is on idle.
Then engine appears to run OK when accellerating or cruising, any suggestions, i was thinking fuel? filter, injector?
could you prescribe any actions that may help determine the fault?

Change the filter first as it takes 5 minutes. Four bolts that undo with an Allen key IIRC.

tried that and no difference, what about a loose timing belt, there appears to be vibration on the pump(excessive) and it is not loose. when i blip the accellerator the vibration and roughness stop but as the engine returns to idle there is a slight noise and vibration coming from the timing belt cover

My 97 1.9td Xantia had an a short period erratic of idling like that prior to the timing belt tensioner breaking up.

Switch it off and remove the timing cover. Anything that could even conceivably mean a belt coming apart is worth immediate investigation.
Wishing that you had taken a look, one second after the bang....
