1997 1.6 cuts out on cold start - toojohnny
Hi, just bought a 97 A4 couple weeks back. When the engine is cold, the car will start, but unless it's given a touch of gas it cuts out. With a bit of gas increasing the revs (maintained for about a minute) the car is then ok. And as long as the engine is even a bit warm it starts, and stays on without assistance.

Any idea what's causing the issues on cold start?

The coolant temperature sensor would be my first check.

Thanks mate. I know there is an issue with the coolant, as the oil cooler has a problem and there is oil in the coolant tank. I will check the temp sensor, but if it was that, would the mixing of oil & coolant have caused it?

Probably not; but get a new oil cooler fitted and the system Persiled-out before it does too much damage.
