99 1.8 Temperature Gauge Goes Off After Car Starts - Drewey
Hi

The temperature gauge needle drops off to the left moments after the engine starts, which i think then causes the two fans to start (including fan 2 even though the air con is off).

The gauge appears to be working while the key is turned to the 'battery' position.

Would be very grateful for any advice.

Thanks

The whole lot runs off the cylinder head temp sensor in the middle of the head.

Disconnecting the sensor has exactly those effects; so it seems as though the engine ECU is either losing contact with it, or it isn't using it's info for some reason. Check the engine earths.

Fault was down to a broke temperature sensor. Had it fixed by a mechanic who said it was a pain to get to.

Once it was fixed my air conditioning started working again.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, it's a pain to get to on the 1.8 - it's down the back of the engine block and IIRC requires removing a number of other components to get to.

The sensor on the 1.6 however is far easier to access, as it sits between two of the spark plugs !
