I've seen this ad at work:

Seat ibiza,1.4,5 door,04 plate,black,32000 miles,new manufactors engine
fitted 1000 miles ago,1 previous owner,air con,remote
c.locking,f,fogs,p.a.s,e.windows,6 months mot 4 months tax.£3250

This was not put up by the seller but his friend. The seller says that he didn't check the oil and went onto the motorway and that's why a new engine had to be fitted. He also says it was fitted by a Seat registered engineer. He also said he thought the warranty was about 1 year and it's almost run out, I rang Seat and they said it should be 2 years.

He says he doesn't need it now as he has a company car.

He also sent some photos which had the VRM on, I did a basic text check and it came back with 3 previous owners; I have sent him an email to ask him how many owners there have been cos I didn't ask him when I spoke to him.

This will be my first car (haven't passed yet) so am particularly wary.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Luke.

Did he say why it's had a new engine? For a 4 year old low mileage car that would concern me unless there is a genuine reason- ie not been thrashed by previous owner constantly.

Added to the fact it's had a lot of owners in a shortish lifetime would make me suspect it may be a bit iffy. Am also suspicious of the "genuine reason for sale/ got a company car/ baby on way" lines in ads.

Apart from that, did drive a couple a few years back as courtesy cars. Thought was a good car, comfortable and good size- incidentally saw new model recently and looked massive, thought was a facelifted Leon at first. Know a couple of people with them and both talk very highly of them. If first car, have heard the 1.2 is quite nippy for the engine size.

I may be very cynical but personally I would be very wary of this car, as all your comments are ringing alarm bells to me. Would recommend getting an engineer to check it out first, or if you can see supplying dealer sticker call them or Seat directly to see if can get any info- may not work, but worth a go if genuinely worried.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for double posts, but had missed the "selling for a friend", big siren ringing now, and 1 year warranty may mean it's an import.

You can check the price on a number of car magazine sites on the net, What Car or Autotrader for example. You don't say which model of the 1.4 it is or I'd have done a check.

The price doesn't seem too bad but I'd have thought you'd be better off with a dealer who'd give you some sort of general warranty.

Is this the car you particularly want or one that fits your budget?

Good luck.

It's an 'S' model.

My original thoughts were reliability and thought about VAG and Japanese cars. I originally thought about a Polo, like the look of some of them (MkV & VII), not the round headlight ones tho (MkVI). Have read bad things about security and leaking. Did sit in one in CarCraft the other day, nice (also sat in a Golf - nice) and both good size.

I was considering a Fabia also. I've ruled out the Yaris on size. But yeah, I really like the MkIV Ibiza (although this site and Wikipedia call them the MkIII - eveywhere else it's the MkIV and the new one isa MkV; I've no idea who's right :D). So, I've pretty much decided on the current model of Ibiza from 2003 onwards.

Problem with dealers is 1) finding one, 2) finding one who's prices aren't extortionate, i.e. car supermarkets, used approved.

Thanks,
Luke.

He implied it blew up cos of neglect.

Thought about the 1.2 but will need to do some motorway driving and thought that the 1.2 wouldn't be powerful enough for that.

Is it worth considering a diesel?

I work strange shifts, 6 on rotating (around the clock - 2 early, 2 late, 2 night) shifts then 4 off. Will be travelling around 10-ish miles each way for work. Will also be trying to get to the gym during these times, so depending on which one I go to will either be a local-ish one of around 7-ish miles each way or a motorway trip of around 15 miles each way.

What do you think? I'm also in Leeds so if you know of any of these cars that would be worth me looking at, feel free to tell me :D

Thanks,
Luke.

Trying to be constructive, if you intend on viewing the car there are some things you can do to protect yourself.

Call seller back on different one you originally used, in case of caller ID, and say calling about the car, if says which one is a trader with something to hide, so forget it.

Does it have a service history, if not then I suspect any warranty may be invalid.

Look for any signs that has done more miles than indicated, worn seats, gear shift, steering wheel, as could have been clocked.

To be totally honest, I really would not bother with this car- the amount of owners and new engine suggest it has got some serious problems and gets offloaded very quickly because of them.

Sorry to sound negative, as know how exciting it can be getting first car, but think this could cause you a lot of problems.

Plenty of alarm bells ringing, and plenty of this particular car about. Walk away.

My instinct too. When information comes out bit by bit like that there's good reason to suppose there may be a lot more that won't come out until too late.

And if an owner has neglected to change or top up oil, what other outrages has he committed?
What do people think? - Lucretia
This was my first instinct but after talking to other people I've convinced myself to go and have a look at it, I've mailed the guy now...dunno :/

He implied it blew up cos of neglect.

Run away, for that sort of money can get much better.

The 1.4 Diesel is a very good engine, drove an Arosa with it and was a huge amount of fun, but don't think would be worth the extra money for your mileage.

As you don't have a license could you get someone to take a 1.2 for a test drive to see what it's like? Pretty sure friends one was a 1.2 and was used for daily 28 mile round trip commute- sometimes motorway.

Hope this helps.
What do people think? - Lucretia
Yup, can get someone to do a test drive. Could even do it myself if stalling lots doesn't matter :D

Yeah have thought about a 1.2 but after reading what car, etc. it was decided that maybe a 1.4 would be better, dunno.

Are you convincing yourself as it's had a new engine all the faults will have been rectified?

Don't forget, if you buy it you will also need to sell it at some point, and do you really fancy having to explain why it had a new engine when it is getting older and more miles?

Aside from wrecking the engine very quickly, as Lud (I think) very wisely pointed out, what else has been trashed? It is quite easy to hide many evils quickly and cheaply, but will show up again.

Shortly after graduating and rushed out and bought a nearly new car, didn't listen to good advice as was too keen on getting my hands on nice shiny newish car, and it was a lemon. Had it for 2 soul destroying years, but couldn't afford to replace it. As soon as the warranty was due to expire I got rid of it as fast as I could, taking quite a major financial hit in depreciation in the process. Taught me many invaluable lessons though.

Sincerely hope you don't end up in the same position.

Where have you been looking to see better for less? I've been looking in the usual places and not found much thus far.

Any of you know any good places to look in Wakefield, Leeds, Dewsbury, Batley area?

Thanks,
Luke.

If you've not passed your test yet, what's the rush? Plate change isn't that far away, so if can wait till September there may be all the part exes coming online.

On top of that, with the new model coming out (not sure if launched here yet- but seen no news about it) Ibiza prices may be coming down a bit soon anyway.

Act in haste, repent at leisure. it's increasingly a buyers market out there.

We have a 54plate 1.2S 3dr Ibiza which we've owned from new (oldest daughters car) and it's done about 33K miles.

The 1.2 engine is OK, especially when given its head - but it's only a 3 cylinder engine and it's around town that it's bad, juddery etc, I've driven a 1.4 and that was a lot better.

The 1.2 really isn't very economical - there has been some hassle about this, but ours does 35MPG. On a free flowing 50 mile journey in the 1.4 I got 50MPG on the trip meter.

Being a 3dr, ours has a stiffer bodyshell than the 5dr and I actually quite like it to drive.

We've had a couple of coil packs (that provide the spark for the spark plugs) fail - but that's a general issue with all VAG petrol cars. Also the heater fan speed controller failed (repaired under warranty) and the a/c needed recharging.

If you're quite young then check the insurance premium - I have a feeling the insurance group jumps on the 1.4.

Funnily enough the dealer called us yesterday to see if we'd like to p/x it for a special edition Ibiza "SportRider"! Ours has some paint damage on the bonnet caused by being hit by a firework and by something that ate through the paint in a couple of spots. I've patched them up but the bonnet really needs a proper respray. It;s metallic Black which shows every mark, but even so, it really hasn't worn well. Bearing this in mind, we were still offered £3350 in p/x for ours, as well as a £500 discount on the new car, so the price of the car you're looking is about right.

However I would nervous about the car you're considering - not so much the engine, that's just one of things, but coupled with some apparent lying over previous owners, would concern me. Do you know the person at work whose friend it is, and will they vouch for them?

I don't know the guy, no. I've decided to sackit off as a bad job and try to save a bit more cash and wait until the new one comes out (next month), there should be more available then.

I'm 35, so insurance wise the 1.4 is fine and I think it's a group 4 anyway.

Seems the next version is out end of the year and not next month as I originally thought.
