My instinct too. When information comes out bit by bit like that there's good reason to suppose there may be a lot more that won't come out until too late.
And if an owner has neglected to change or top up oil, what other outrages has he committed?

This was my first instinct but after talking to other people I've convinced myself to go and have a look at it, I've mailed the guy now...dunno :/

He implied it blew up cos of neglect.
Run away, for that sort of money can get much better.
The 1.4 Diesel is a very good engine, drove an Arosa with it and was a huge amount of fun, but don't think would be worth the extra money for your mileage.
As you don't have a license could you get someone to take a 1.2 for a test drive to see what it's like? Pretty sure friends one was a 1.2 and was used for daily 28 mile round trip commute- sometimes motorway.
Hope this helps.

Yup, can get someone to do a test drive. Could even do it myself if stalling lots doesn't matter :D
Yeah have thought about a 1.2 but after reading what car, etc. it was decided that maybe a 1.4 would be better, dunno.

Are you convincing yourself as it's had a new engine all the faults will have been rectified?
Don't forget, if you buy it you will also need to sell it at some point, and do you really fancy having to explain why it had a new engine when it is getting older and more miles?
Aside from wrecking the engine very quickly, as Lud (I think) very wisely pointed out, what else has been trashed? It is quite easy to hide many evils quickly and cheaply, but will show up again.
Shortly after graduating and rushed out and bought a nearly new car, didn't listen to good advice as was too keen on getting my hands on nice shiny newish car, and it was a lemon. Had it for 2 soul destroying years, but couldn't afford to replace it. As soon as the warranty was due to expire I got rid of it as fast as I could, taking quite a major financial hit in depreciation in the process. Taught me many invaluable lessons though.
Sincerely hope you don't end up in the same position.

Where have you been looking to see better for less? I've been looking in the usual places and not found much thus far.
Any of you know any good places to look in Wakefield, Leeds, Dewsbury, Batley area?
Thanks,
Luke.

If you've not passed your test yet, what's the rush? Plate change isn't that far away, so if can wait till September there may be all the part exes coming online.
On top of that, with the new model coming out (not sure if launched here yet- but seen no news about it) Ibiza prices may be coming down a bit soon anyway.

Act in haste, repent at leisure. it's increasingly a buyers market out there.

We have a 54plate 1.2S 3dr Ibiza which we've owned from new (oldest daughters car) and it's done about 33K miles.
The 1.2 engine is OK, especially when given its head - but it's only a 3 cylinder engine and it's around town that it's bad, juddery etc, I've driven a 1.4 and that was a lot better.
The 1.2 really isn't very economical - there has been some hassle about this, but ours does 35MPG. On a free flowing 50 mile journey in the 1.4 I got 50MPG on the trip meter.
Being a 3dr, ours has a stiffer bodyshell than the 5dr and I actually quite like it to drive.
We've had a couple of coil packs (that provide the spark for the spark plugs) fail - but that's a general issue with all VAG petrol cars. Also the heater fan speed controller failed (repaired under warranty) and the a/c needed recharging.
If you're quite young then check the insurance premium - I have a feeling the insurance group jumps on the 1.4.
Funnily enough the dealer called us yesterday to see if we'd like to p/x it for a special edition Ibiza "SportRider"! Ours has some paint damage on the bonnet caused by being hit by a firework and by something that ate through the paint in a couple of spots. I've patched them up but the bonnet really needs a proper respray. It;s metallic Black which shows every mark, but even so, it really hasn't worn well. Bearing this in mind, we were still offered £3350 in p/x for ours, as well as a £500 discount on the new car, so the price of the car you're looking is about right.
However I would nervous about the car you're considering - not so much the engine, that's just one of things, but coupled with some apparent lying over previous owners, would concern me. Do you know the person at work whose friend it is, and will they vouch for them?

I don't know the guy, no. I've decided to sackit off as a bad job and try to save a bit more cash and wait until the new one comes out (next month), there should be more available then.
I'm 35, so insurance wise the 1.4 is fine and I think it's a group 4 anyway.

Seems the next version is out end of the year and not next month as I originally thought.
