OK , maybe one of my more silly ideas.

Shortly going to be driving to South of France and back, a distance of several thousand miles. Now I see advertised in car magazines, "clear shields" for exotic cars that are transparent, look just like a sheet of cling film (obviously thicker and stronger) but protect the car.

As much as I love driving these sort of distances, I hate having to try and remove all the dead insects at the other end.

Apart from possibly looking stupid, could I put some cling film on the front of bonnet and bumpers and just peel off when I arrive and take all the dead things with it? How does cling film react to heated metal? Would it melt to it, never to come off again?

Or should I get a life? :)

I don't know, the only time I have put cling film on a car was to trap someone in it :D

Car bra? I think that's what they're actually for.

Do you have kids?

If you do, then trust me, the shame you will bring on them by wrapping your car in cling film and the consequent mithering you will get during your holiday should be weighed up.

I think your last comment in your posting suggests you know the answer to your question!

Bobby probably has a good point. When I last drove from London to Warsaw the front of the car was a total mess, completely splattered with bugs and they were a pig to remove, I resorted to using a brillo pad and still haven't shifted them all. Dunno what the answer is but cling film won't stay on at high speed.

Hi Bobby - When I'm doing long runs in warm countries I keep a "bug shifter" sponge in the car. You have probably seen them in car accessory shops. They are basically a sponge wrapped in a nylon mesh. Five minutes with one of these and a bottle of clean water and you are sorted. A lot less hassle than applying film or other protective devices. Enjoy your hols. Which way are you going?

I've got one of those, and also you can buy 'bug shifting spray' in an aerosol can. It comes out as a foam which you leave on the car for five minutes and it softens dried-on deposits, it does seem easier to shift dead flies. Last summer I was using it every evening after driving home from work as there seemed to be a plague of flies hovering over the motorway for a week or two.

You might get the same result with other forms of detergent frothed up to make a foam?

My other lazy mans trick is to keep a very high level of screenwash concentrate in the washer bottle. Give the windscreen a squirt while cleaning it with the "bug shifter" and the detergent which will get on to the sponge will also help to move the bugs from the paintwork. Rinse off with a bottle of water. Nae bother !

Cheers for those comments!

Shoespy, I have a small sponge similar to what you describe that I normally use for my windscreen, might try that with the front as well. In my vast array of chemicals for the car I also have insect remover or something similar. Maybe I just need to squeeze them into one of the "hidey holes" in the car!

Re route, Glasgow to Tunnel, staying overnight in Guines near Calais, then down through Paris to Chambord, staying overnight again and then down to the South over the Millau Bridge!

However coming back, will probably do as I have done before and come back up the East side, via Lyons as I find the motorways there quicker.

Can't wait!

Done a similar run a few times over the years. Nice drive. I remember the first time I saw the Millau from a distance, I thought it was large sailing boats from a few miles away but couldn't understand what they would be doing so far inland. Stunning sight when close up and when actually crossing it isn't it? The Top Gear guys did a feature on it one time. Can't remember the cars but I think they were something quite impressive too.

Back to insects. Ten years ago we took our Westfield on our honeymoon on a sort of latterday Grand Tour. We had booked several hotels in advance and one or two of them were quite posh. One night in the south of France we arrived at a particularly upmarket establishment rather later than planned and had to go straight into the restaurant before it closed. We must have looked eccentric at best as we sat in this rather fine restaurant picking dead creatures out of our hair and off our clothes !

Aren't the clear films to stop stone chips to the paintwork rather than keep bugs off? Dead insects always come off with a good blob of car polish soaked into the mess & a firm rub, and if the whole front of the car is polished first they tend not to stick anyway.

One of the great things about summer holidaying in France is the morning dew. Go out first thing in the morning, and your insects are nicely hydrated and will just slide off. Windscreen will clean with no bother too.

Must be the Froggy, Froggy dew

made to measure thin clear plastic covers for the most vunerable front of the car, eg front of bonnet etc, are routine in new zealand, as many of their roads are nothing but gravel

if you want similar i would try sourcing one from there

much better job than cling film

I don`t do anything, the impacted Summer continental flies always weather off on their own in the November rain.

German taxis and police cars are covered in it you have whatever colour you want it is manufactured by a company called Foliatec.

I cling film all my gizmos remote controls. It keeps the keys pristine and SWMBO's over moisturised hands cannnot then dissolve the key's identifying legends. My DVD recorder's (4 years old) looks as good as the day I bought it!

The day before taking my Mondeo to a Rolling Road session I did a complete detail with various polishes, waxes etc.

Unfortunately I then had to drive 80 miles up the M5 - so I covered the front bumper in clingfilm.

Just around the corner from the place I removed it all and turned up with a completely clean car!

VW camper and Beetle owners often have fabric covers for the front/bonnet to protect it from stones etc. They call them bras.

No reason why you couldn't get one made up for your model of car.

What about the stuff that covered cars when they were being delivered? Does that still exist and what is/was it?

Cling film the car? - Mapmaker
If you want to drive a car that looks like a rubbish bag, what's the point in buying a nice car. Buy a car that looks rubbish anyway. Can't do much for the aerodynamics and petrol consumption anyway, can it?

BobbyG, here are 2 options for you, both of which work perfectly.

Likewise.

Autoglym Insect Remover gets good reviews too.

Many years ago I did an "expedition", which was sponsored by various firms, in a new Transit. We covered the van in clear "sticky backed plastic" - like thicker clingfilm, and had all the logos signwritten on that. When we came back we peeled it all off and the van looked like new.
However, judging from the weather the last few years in N France and here, the rain will do the job and clear the insects for you automatically on the way back. Otherwise, I find that a good coat or two of Autoglym Extra Gloss or similar makes them easy to get off.

Reminds me of a nice exchange I heard once.

"What would you do if a bird [goes to the toilet] on your car"?

"I'd dump her"
