Hi,
I have only used the diesel sport, but apart from the difference in power output I can confirm that it is a fine, stable towcar. We tow an 1100kg caravan without a stabiliser (as I believe that these can mask the early indications of a poorly matched/ loaded outfit) with ease. I don't think that the lower power or torque is so much lower that it will greatly affect the car's overall suitability. The nose weight I use is near the maximum (taking into consideration the rear passengers (kids) and the rear suspension still has a good amount of travel left with the hitch clearing speed humps easily. Shop around for the towbar if you haven't got one, even the dealers have a wide range of prices from dealer to dealer, I saved £50 by travelling an extra 20 miles.
We achieve around 30 mpg with my caravan in tow at Motorway speeds.
Do check the tyre pressures though as there is quite a big differnce between the light and loaded figures.

Thanks davmal for your input!I am so confused over this!Towcar awards 07 states that it is areasonable tow.At the 85% match= 1300kgs at a kerbweight of car 1542kgs."What tow car".com give it out at 86% tow,CC&C club rate it at an 85% tow with my van of 1281kgs.Howver,On mazda forum,I told I will be lucky if I can tow a 1000lbs.The towcar awards for 08(out this month) state the the mazda 5 will not tow at 85%.I have compared similar cars with similar spec and they all will tow at or around 85%.What I can't understand is,if thats the case, why cant the mazda5 tow my van??
I am totally confused.com!!!!!!!!

jdbabe, I have been towing an ABI jubilee herald caravan of approx 1275kg all year with a 2.0 litre diesel mazda 5ts2.
Almost another 200kg worth of 'kit' loaded inside, I have had no problems at all and the van follows the mazda as if its on rails (so long as you stick under 60mph).
I do however always travel with a buldog anti snake device, so this helps to keep the van in line.
Best regards.

Hi all! many thanks for your input, much appreciated!Since I last posted,I have taken delivery of the mazda 5 ts2 2.0lt petrol 146bhp 08 facelift model and completed the 600 miles "running in" they recommend if you plan on towing.I have been assured by the dealer that the tyre probs experienced on previous models was due to tracking probs which have now been rectified on the facelift model. There is something else I would like to ask though....I do alot of vanning without EHU and carry a generator along with all the other ususal stuff in the boot when I tow the van.I have been advised that I might need spring assisters as the suspension can be a little soft and prone to wallowing. Is this the case and if so,what size would I need?I know I would have to measure the "gap" when the car is raised but as I am disabled this is impossible for me to do.
