I recently dumped several car loads of rubbish at the tip in Crawley. Not brought from home in Scotland! I was surprised to have my car registration number shown on a display at the entrance, will I get a bill, fine, letter of commendation, or an entry on yet another database.

I don't think so , believe they are there to monitor how much is going in- my dad is renovating his property and recently had a siren go off when entering. He had been in every day for 2 or 3 weeks - the attendant just came over to check what he was carrying. I suppose it is to deter any trade waste coming in in the back of an estate car daily.

The information commission have a strict code of practice for CCTV installations, which includes a prominent warning sign saying why the cameras are there, who operates them, and providing contact details for that organisation.
As ANPR relies on CCTV, I would have thought they should follow the same guidelines. At the very least, you should be entitled to ask the council why they are there, and what is done with the images.
Things like this just make problems like flytipping worse, IMHO. Our local tip doesn't have these (yet), but it's constant hassle with fluorescent jacketed gorillas following you round barking at you that you're putting stuff in the wrong bins. It takes about 20 minutes to unload a carful and that's after queueing for 20 more to get in!
Cheers

Much as things change they stay the same.
In the 70's you couldn't do anything due to the brothers setting and enforcing their own rules. All problems solved by a piece of blue paper.
Now its all Environmental Issues. All problems solved by a piece of brown paper.

I recently hired a box trailer to help someone move house and whilst I had it I decided to do a dump run to save the interior of my car getting scratched. The jobsworth at the tip was very rude to me and would not allow me in with the trailer and accused me of being a trader! I told him not to talk to me in such a manner and reminded him my taxes were actually paying his salary which made me the customer and therefore he should treat me as such. He shouted at me to go forth and multiply!
So I turned around parked outside the entrance to the tip disconnected the trailer loaded all the rubbish from the trailer into the CRV and drove back in and dumped the lot. So if I had been a trader they would have accepted the waste anyway providing it was in the back of a car.

Our local council says:
Can I take trailer on to the tip?
If the trailer is over 6ft x 4ft or twin axle you will need to apply for a set of permits to allow you to use the site to take your household waste. These can be obtained by ringing the Call Centre on (01482) 393939 or (01482) 393333 or the permit hotline (01482) 395581 or e-mail wastewatchers@eastriding.gov.uk

I see, It was a small(ish) twin axle trailer.
It's a shame their operatives didn't explain things in a friendly and curtious manner.

Oh, come on Pica. They're not Shell petrol tanker delivery drivers. How much do you think they get paid? Peanuts and monkeys spring to mind ;>)
|
You are probably quite correct with your assumption but I paid around £2500 towards their roasted peanuts last year!
