I'm convinced that a lot of drivers put very little real thought into their driving. For example ...........
Our health centre is on a newish development at the end of a cul-de-sac, with the gateway facing the flow of traffic. Just before the end of the road there is a mini-roundabout painted on the road to allow for a possible new road in the future going off to the right as you approach the health centre. The land on both sides is completely open, and it's obvious there's no road to the right, but most drivers (when visiting and leaving the health centre) still slavishly drive around the mini-roundabout instead of driving straight over it. If they don't think about that, what else don't they think about?

They might be thinking `too much` L`escargot.
Up here in my part of West Yorkshire there is saturation street camera coverage. You have no option but to drive (and park) by the book if you want to be really sure of not picking up points or fines.
Even when you think you are away from them, you are never more than 6 feet from a `Yellow Jacket` in its many forms, most of which are just twitching to meet some sort of `target`.
Regards:)

No cameras. No visible police presence. As for traffic wardens, it has been well publicised in the local press that there isn't a single one in the whole town. Double yellow lines are parked on with gay abandon. Motoring misdemeanours are rife.

Those who like to park illegally should make the most of it, because I expect there are plans to adopt recent legislation enabling the privatisation of parking enforcement.
Obviously can't speak for where you are, Mr Snail, but many local authorities have gone/are going down this route.

I see evidence that the vast majority of people "Drive without a great deal of thought" every day on the way to work when I see the long queue of cars ahead of me and behind me, all doing 50-ish, all with no hope of doing differently, yet almost all tailgating the car in front of them horrendously, just because it's never even occurred to them that it might be dangerous and utterly pointless.

when you drive an emergency service vehicle with the new strobe blue lamps on, with alternate flashing headlamps... at speed, up behind someone at night on a dual carriageway, there's a significant number who don't react until you are right up behind them, literally stuck behind them, waiting for a reaction.
as you're approaching them many hundreds of yards back, some motorists, with the newer blue lamps, move over significantly quicker than they used to (several hundred yards)...and you can see the reflective street signs glowing alternately all around you, including ahead. The newer lamps are so bright they hurt your eyes if you're stood right next to them, amazingly effective.
yet still some don't see you. I'd imagine it must look like a large luminous blue christmas tree coming up behind you.
It can only be serial non usage of the mirror, which is obviously extremely poor driving. You'd think they'd wonder why the street signs they can see in their headlamps are alternately glowing differently, but they don't.

Too many driving licences, too many inept/inadequate drivers, not enough police officers to cope with the low standards, and no political guts for enforcement. Rant over:)

Not thinking costs lives - ask any motorcyclist !

I have never been a motorcyclist but am quite happy, when I consider conditions are OK to give them extra room. i.e. a gentle swerve left and they are usually on their way, often with an ack. No problem if they keep their hands on the bars.
I often see other car drivers in front who are either b minded or do not use their mirrors so stay close to the centre line.
Quite a few bikers do not take into account that, in a continuous stream of traffic, mirrors are often less used so steaming up on the offside can up the risk that a vehicle can move out on them without warning.

Drive on the RIGHT!
Until, fellow car driver, you are well clear of me when you are overtaking.
We have two lanes and there is none behind you so please avoid blocking my view and chucking spray and crud all over my windscreen.:-(
Drive on the LEFT ?
The bus lane only applies for 2/3 hours in the morning --can't you read?
On second thoughts stay where you are and I can undertake many of you:-)

" And you are sat at the junction/roundabout waiting to emerge after I have passed. But actually I am going to turn in and cant be bothered to indicate. I'm not doing it on purpose I just have a brain thats in neutral. "

"What? You mean, my BMW's got indicators? Never!"
|
Yes.
It also has switches that turn OFF the front and rear fog lights in clear visibility.
And a proximity radar which allows you to travel through fog at 80mph.
