We're going to buy one tomorrow...pre-owned 4000 miles on the clock and for about £18k - worried about the fuel pump issues, should i be? Any info greatly appreciated.

If it's still in under warranty then fine. Good car imo.
If not, buy a a new one.

Have a look at a Golf estate - you could have a new one for £18k, and it's roomier than it looks from the outside. 500/1500 litres playing the Passat's 513/1641. Also look at the Octavia estate - same price (new) as a Golf but splitting the difference in capacity between Golf and Passat. You can have either with the 2.0 TDI engine and DSG.
I think fuel pump issues only arise in older, high-mileage cars.
And no, I don't know why they measure luggage capacitry in litres!

It's a lot of money for very very dull and boring car. If you simply want a reliable workhouse with no passion or interest in it whatsoever why spend £18k? You can get the same thing for much less.
If you spend £18k, buy something special. What about a nice Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI 170 S-Line?

"If you simply want a reliable workhouse.... "
You're too young for the workhouse Michael!
I loved my A4 Avant but it was a 2.5 - now a 2.7 and too expensive new. I thought about it and a new Golf with the same engine simply made more sense, particularly as the Golf V has sharper steering and handling than an A4, certainly the previous model which is what you'd get for £18k.

just became a father for the 1st time, we have a 1 year old 2.0tdi sport jetta....awesome....my wife wants something similar but with a bit more space...seemed like the natural choice.
We test drove the touran, boring...honda crv...too small a boot....c4 grand....not well built...the audi would be nice ....too much to insure and not as roomy....thanks for the advice but the passat seems like a good choice...and i'm glad i don't have to worry about the fuel pump.
