1999 tddi - scrap or repair? - OldPeculiar
Hi All

I have a 'T' reg ('99) Tddi Focus estate with 125K on the clock that broke down yesterday. After being towed to the garage it's been diagnosed with a bust fuel pump which will cost £700 for the pump, £300 labour plus VAT on top to replace. (I browsed the owners club website and it seems that this price is pretty much par for the course)

A quick search on autotrader showed a couple of similar cars advertised for around £1700. so what I'm trying to decide at the moment is whether to fork out the dough and hope nothing else goes wrong or scrap it.

Does anyone have any thoughts/guidence or past experince?

Thanks

maybe do a search of breakers on-line and find a second hand pump cheaper? Followed by tracking down a good indie garage to do the job for less? A lot depends on your gut feeling for the rest of the car; ie is it tatty and needing four new tyres and exhaust too etc etc or is it otherwise faultlessly reliable and immaculate?

Might be worth looking at what they fetch on eBay - my guess is something closer to £1,000. Autotrader prices are where the negotiating starts, not where it finishes...

Equally, I guess that if you put it on eBay you will get what it's worth less £400. (somebody will find a second hand pump at £100, and DIY and get £300 "profit").

Here's a similar example, eBay item number 140233266922 £900 2000 MOT failure with a list of faults.

That's interesting - theres a whole load of very similar foci that have been sold as non-runners on ebay with the same fault for around £500. That would be better than a scrappy although I'd have to get the garage to tow it round and drop it on my drive first.

Thats a very expensive fuel pump, is that the right price?

Fuel pump went on the 530d a year or so ago, warranty covered it but the cost was only abotu £400 all in...
