I have a peugeot 306 turbo diesel 1.9 1996 and i get a knocking sound from the front end whenever i brake with force or go over speed bumps i have just spent alot of money getting it through its mot and am at a loss what to do.
does it get to a stage with old cars that noises are compulsory?
used to get similar knocking sound on full lock then the steering colum needed tightening.

Sounds like one or both lower suspension arms are shot. These wear faster on the diesels due to the extra weight of the engine.

i wouldn't think it's the wishbones, unless there's any advisory on the mot that there starting to go, if there lose enough to knock under braking then there more than likely bad enough to fail the mot.
id probably suspect the rear subframe mounts personally, they cost about £50 from buypartsby.com.
best way to check is to either put the car on some ramps if you have some, if you don't then park with two wheels on the kerb, then crawl under and have a good pull at the suspension components. if it's the wishbones you'll most definately be able to replicate the noise, if it's the rear subframe mounts then you may not be able to replicate it.

if it's just passed it's MOT would'nt have that come up in the inspection?

Not familiar with this car, but is it suspension mounts?, these are often acentuated by humps, the braking from speed would also put pressure on any suspension mounts.
Then again, you have had an MOT that obviously cost some, and surely they would have looked for any other earners possible, as they do.
If it was jsut braking, then stones traped in diss/covers, loose calipers, badly fitting pads. There are a lot of parts to a front end of a car. Are teh driveshafts in good order, no knocking on turns?
