My other half's parents are looking to downsize from their vectra auto to something smaller. They have about 6k + their vectra to spend. They were thinking something like the nissan micra auto in diesel but I am not sure whether that is the best thing. They were thinking of switching from petrol to diesel but as they do less than 15k a year then I can't see the point and a switch at their years might be more prone to misfueling than one done when younger.

Whatever they buy needs to be cheap to run, with a decent auto, reasonably safe and reliable. Any ideas on what vehicle to suggest? I was thinking the cmax or a jazz. Tax band would probably need to be C or below.

Just come back off holiday where I had a Toyota Aygo MMt Auto .. once got used the MMT box it was a great little car ... same car as a Puegeot 106 or a Citron C1

Cost of diesel these days hardly seems worth botherinf esp if only 15k a year ... this little petrol Aygo was giving me nearly 70 mpg !!

Didn't feel too slow?

Nissan Micra
Honda Jazz
Toyota Yaris or Aygo
Daihatsu Sirion
Hyundai Getz
Kia Picanto

No point getting diesel for that mileage - these little cars don't use much fuel anyway.

Colleague looked at this very situation this week for his wife and bought a new Kio Rio auto for £7995.

Kia Rio was up on my list as it isn't too small. Not sure how they'd get along going from a vectra down to an aygo!

French cars are out due to reliability.

I'll pass on the suggestions. They'll probably take no notice and come back with something completely left field like a honda crv!

Nothing wrong with the CRV, but it's not small or particularly economical.

Renault Clio is worth a test drive.

Good luck.

Renault automatic?
I'd be very cautious; our Megane suffered auto box failure.
Personally, I'd stick with something Japanese or Korean for a small auto.

I know someone who's on her second auto Clio and quite content. I've been in both cars and like the way the auto works.

I've just looked it up and it appears that there's a newish "proactive" auto box on the Clios but whether that's French or Japanese, I don't know.

Good luck.

After saying at the weekend they were going to stick with what they had, yesterday they bought a honda jazz after driving past one at a garage! 5 years old, 20k on the clock and £5500. At least they stuck with petrol as I think diesel would be a waste of money for them.

Nissan Note 1.6 auto is a good car. Test drove one at the weekend and came away very impressed. Small, yet roomy and practical, with nice smooth 110bhp and good refinement, lots of toys. 8995 for a 1.6SE on 07 plate with the right spec (A/C, alloys etc).

My mother-in-law has a Jazz auto, also a good car, but I felt the Note had a more 'big car' feel, especially if downsizing from a Vectra

Interesting - I've been thinking about replacing our Jazz and now manufacture has moved to China I really don't like the idea of buying a Chinese made car - it's almost unavoidable on some products and they get enough from us. I really feel that, all things being equal, it would be good to support cars like Note which is at least built in the UK.

Note sure about the 1.6 engine though - we had a 1.6 Clio before the Jazz and even 5 yrs ago dealers were not that interested in taking it in p/x.
