Does anybody know if the 1.9 diesel SEDAN will run ok on Bio Diesel ??

either the bosch or lucas system will run fine on proper bio diesel. if by bio diesel you mean 100% straight veg oil then the bosch system will be fine, the lucas system will handle no more than a 50% mix with normal diesel and even then it may kill the pump anyway.

nothing thick about it, if you don't know you don't know.

the top link is a lucas pump (yours may be slightly different) and the second is a bosch pump (only one style of these, the silver 'flying saucer' is quite distinctive)

Any diesel engine can run on properly made biodiesel. Older (pre mid-90's) cars may need their fuel lines replaced as bio-d can rot the old rubber ones. Other than that there should be no problems. Bio-d gives several advantages: It is cheap to make. Gives better economy and throttle response. Lubricates your injectors far better than petro-diesel. And of course is virtually carbon neutral. www.biodieselcommunity.org

I've been running mine on biodiesel fine for the last few months. The bosch will work with straight veg but the lucas will work best with proper biodiesel (veg oil mixed with methanol and caustic soda) and can run on purely this with no mix needed.

Hi Guys, I run a '96 406 2.1TD and wish to try a 50/50 mix of veg oil and diesel. Thing is though I have a Lucas pump...

What exactly would 'kill' the pump, is it the extra viscosity of the veg oil? In which case perhaps use 30 - 40% oil.

Or do the seals etc react to the veg oil (meaning stick to 100% diesel)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Unless you have a source of cheap veg oil you won't be saving any money, and you'll be risking your car. Veg oil is about £1.00/litre or more in most outlets. the only way to make real savings is to buy/source your own used, filtered veg oil. Sells for around 55p/litre in bulk.

Try www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk forum for more info.

it's about £18 for 20 litres of veg oil at cash and carry. so about £7 cheaper than diesel so roughly £21 per average diesel tank if using 100%.

from what i remember (haven't looked into veg oil in peugeot engines for ages, i moved onto a 3.5 litre bmw so doubt think about economy) the reason the lucas pumps don't like it is it uses diesel for lubricating the seals which the veg oil doesn't do so they rot away and start to leak. the bosch system doesn't rely so much on this form of lubrication so runs fine.

as ive said before i ran my 1.9td 306 on a 50/50 mix of veg oil diesel with lucas pump for around 10k miles without any problems what so ever but i also knew fuel pumps for this engine are cheap enough on ebay and that i could fit it diy.

Thanks for making it a little clearer Chris. I suppose the 50% diesel would still be lubricating to a certain extent, but it just doesn?t really seem worth it now.

I?m also worrying about ring-gumming as well??.

For my daily 30 mile commute, I reckon on saving 3 quid a week on a 50/50 mix (Tesco veg oil and diesel) ? not worth it when you consider a new pump and labour etc.

Can?t stand the smell anyway???

Thanks for the advice.

No danger of ring-gumming on the PSA XUD 1.9 as it's indirect injection. My 405 TD loves veg oil, but it has a Bosch pump. I bought a 1000 litre container of filtered veg oil for £400 delivered just before diesel shot up in the Spring.
