LPG Taxation - Blue {P}
Hi all, just a quick question, does anyone have any information about the government's plans for taxation on LPG fuel next year? The last that I heard and the tax was fixed until 2009 but I've found no mention of what will happen after that date.

I would hope that at worst there would be a gradual increase to narrow the gap between LPG and petrol over a period of several years, but my gut tells me that this government can't be trusted and would probably make an abrupt change.

I'm still toying with having the Mondeo converted as I simply can't find any other vehicle to match it for power but with 40mpg economy without resorting to a newer common-rail diesel. (even the TDCi 130 ain't gonna be nicer to drive than the V6)

I agree that the government can't be trusted, but a couple of weeks ago, I read on a government website that they have committed to give 3 years notice to any change from the status quo. The tax is supposed to track petrol tax rises penny for penny at the moment.

Thanks Hamsafar, I did a little more digging and I managed to find this pledge that they've made, I'm not totally convinced but it certainly helps my decision making!

My friend has just had his old style Accord converted and is over the moon, no running problems (in fact he says it's quieter) and he got 240 miles to £20 on a run, which is better than my Mondeo can average at 56 mph down a hill! :-)

have covered this before , as somebody occasionally running a large LPG - converted 4 x 4 : In many cases it is impossible to stock up on LPG , only one station per area stocking it, and when they're out , they're out , and often the equipment malfunctions . Caveat. As for 20 quid for over 200 miles , very doubtful. The large 4 x 4 I refer to gets barely 210 miles on 60 quid's worth .

210 miles to £60!? My V6 engined petrol car gets better economy than that! The figure you quote works out at about 8mpg, how big is the 4X4?

There's plenty of availability around here, my uncle runs an LPG Rover to use on his daily 100+ mile commute, no problems with stocking up.

it's a 4.2 petrol , 6 cylinder .

that's right , LPG is now 61.9 p a litre around here . The tank is a nominal 120 litres but actually takes 106 litres when totally empty , and that lasts around 220 miles in mixed suburban driving . We zero the trip meter on every fill .

so a penny for penny rise - as LPG is broadly half the cost of regular unleaded , a like for like increase means it's going up at double the rate of petrol .

I own a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 estate 2003 and it runs solely on LPG these days.

I get a return of roughly 300 to 350 miles on 50 litres of LPG.

I am currently paying between 49.9p and 52.9p per litre.

I purchase no more than 5 litres of unleaded every 6 - 8 weeks.

I pay lower road fund tax.

My insurance premium is also cheaper too.

If I lived in London or had to travel there - it is exempt of the congestion charge as well.

The vehicle is holding its price better than a standard 1.6 as it is a manufacturer fitted conversion.

In the right vehicle, LPG does return the investment.
