I was idly wondering today about buying an old 'proper' pick up truck (Not a fashion statement) so something like an old Hilux, P100 etc.

Is the insurance and VED on these comparable to a car or different as they are commerical vehicles?

Road tax is £185; insurance will often be cheaper that most cars.

Finding a rust-free P100 - that will be the hard bit..... [Try Turkey.]

I thought the tax would be dear...

Rust is OK it would only be a work hack and for putting bikes in the back!

Don't take rust on a P100 too lightly; the Sierra-derived bits aren't too bad and the chassis are strong, but anything stamped exclusively for them [tray, roof, sills, r/bulkhead, floor] can collapse in days - it's not cosmetic rust we're talking here.

Beware pugged-up blow-overs.

Buy an old Yank (pre-72) nil tax, classic insurance, built like a brick outhouse .

Convert it to LPG if you want to, otherwise it's 15 mpg. You can stick a 2.5 Transit/Isuzu/Toyota lump in if you want to but that destroys the point, which is to irritate tree-huggers and environmental campaigners.

Plenty of old 50's Chevys around on e-bay, often much more solid than they look.

Job done.

Body panels rust in the usual places, but the chassis are built like the Forth Bridge. engines might be thirsty but they're ultra-reliable, never wear out and will pull the side of a house down. A Hilux, BTW, is only a cheap copy of a "proper" pick-up truck and not a patch on Yank stuff.

Had mine 3 years, love it to bits.

Still struggling to learn banjo though.

A year ago, I decided an old Subaru pick-up truck would be an ideal addition to the driveway, but found that most insurers wanted over £600 to cover it.

The exception was the National Farmers' Union. I'm no farmer, but they insured me anyway - insurance for any driver over 25 was £350 including breakdown cover and legal assistance. The renewal has just come through, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the premium has gone down for the coming year to just over £300.

Road tax, as has already been mentioned above, is £185 per year.

I always wanted a Mk1 Mini pick up when I was younger for all my skiing kit. You know with wide wheels and stuff. My Dad made me buy a Wolseley Hornet instead. Not cool.

On the subject of insurance. Just renewed mine today. It has come down quite a lot I am pleased and somewhat surprised to say. When I asked if this was because I had such a good track record, they said that this did have a bearing but that it was more to do with age........Humph !

But for that money you don't get the Rover V8/disc brake upgrade...

Just renewed my insurance on the GMC.

120 quid fully comp including breakdown cover.

Only 1500 agreed miles but I've yet to exceed that in any year, it's only used at weekends as a rule.

I noticed that you were looking to insure and old pick up truck. If you are not using it for commercial use then the insurance is likely to be cheaper. If you keep it off the road at night and keep your mileage down then again it will also likely bring the price down as will insuring it third party only. I would go to a specialist broker that does truck insurance - try getting a quote from someone like Warrings, their truck insurance website is www.truck.warrings.co.uk. Anyway good luck, I think more and more of us will be buying older vehicles now this recession is upon us!
