I bet so many forum contributors want to say "sounds about right" but daren't.
I never said that, by the way, was just reading the minds of others.

He wasn't a Fosters parent was he??

In the event of a 'violent deceleration', an unrestrained 36-pack of gassy tinned beer would wreak far more havoc than a well-padded nipper. Clearly the motorist had weighed up all likely eventualities.
Of course another possible cause might be that the beer got in first and so was first served. No doubt the nipper was warned that he would be unrestrained, and accepted the lift nevertheless, it being clearly understood that it was 'at his own risk'.

You will understand, doctorchris, that I was merely reporting a new article, not expressing an opinion.

It's so sad. I fondly imagined that the Australian outback was still the last place on earth where there were no motoring or health and safety rules, and children still rode on tractor mudguards or sat on the bonnet of landrovers as I used to.

Like the US, Australia has some pretty heavy-duty PC along with quite a lot of , er, the other thing...

"children still rode on tractor mudguards"
I always thought that the toolbox mounted on the mudguard of the little old grey "Fergies" was designed as a child seat!

To (mis)quote the famous beer ad of the 1980s, "(Some) Australians wouldn't give a XXXX." For health and safety, I mean. IIRC, Northern Territory has no speed limits on desert highways: packs of beer, no speed limit and unrestrained children riding in the back - makes for an interesting motoring panorama...

You read my mind correctly doctorchris - and I have 2 children.

Now look here, Bruce, Oz is OZ, right? A man's got a right to spend more time with a sheep than with his wife, wear a hat with corks on string, and take good care of his beer. How can you be sure of a chilled tube later, otherwise? Kids? Every time I go home the wife seems to have another one.
Thing is, Bruce, unlike this HJ mob, we're not a bunch of pommie pooftahs. Seen the way they go on and on about cars? What's wrong with a truck if you want to go somewhere? Now where's me tucker bag?
