03 1.6 Radio Problem - stecw12
hi
i'm no tech head, but my wife has a 1.4 leon and the first thing i did ws to remove that huge brick of a thing and replace it with a well known brand which played mp3's. reason for this was i heard that the standard radio was unreliable at times and hers didnt have a multi changer.
the total cost was less than £100 that included the new stereo a wire converter from vw to universal and a black facia plate that goes around the new stereo as the leons are alot wider, same for all vw's.
its easy to do your self if you go down this route. in know motor world had theses add ons.

i know this doesnt help your problem but it my be another route you could go down.

You don't say what the problem is exactly, although I'd guess it appears to be dead?
These radios were typically made by Grundig, so you could trawl through the net to see if that gives you some pointers. Are you brave enough to prize the lid off and check for any fuses that may be blown? (I confess that I've not opened mine up to see if it has an internal fuse) If, on the other hand it is reading "SAFE" on the display, you will need to leave it switched on for about an hour (my manual says to leave it switched off; my radio must have missed that briefing at the factory) before you can punch in it's code, assuming it has a security code. Apologies that it's not the most comprehensive response but they would be the first things I would check for and it sounds like you have little to lose.
Ultimately (and especially if you didn't shell out for a CD changer in the glove box) the other post about replacing the radio with a well known brand is probably a great plan. The standard radio is unlikely to go down in history as the greatest audio invention of all time - and a new unit from one of the top makes may make you think you have had a new pair of ears fitted!

I have just encountered this problem, i pulled out the radio to find that the 10 amp fuse which is in the radio its self had blown so after resolving this problem i am now charging my car up for an hour so i can ener the security code. Hope this helps.
