I had a new back box and central pipe fitted by a chain / dealer. The new exhaust sounds way louder than the one previously.
It's not a hole or bad fitting - the noise is coming out the tail pipe.
The guy who fitted it said that sometimes there are faulty silencers where the packing was not settled right but in his opinion the noise is as it should be. He said he could order another one but it would probably sound the same.
Could the new exhaust be faulty?
Could he have fitted the wrong part? (maybe the diesel 2.0 is different from the petrol 2.0?)
Are exhausts now louder in general?
This Xsi never sounded meaty but this new exhaust does make it sound a bit boy racer-ish. I wouldn't have minded if I was in my 20's but it is a bit annoying driving around - especially on motorways.

If the part fits the car, it is 99% likely to be the right one. It will quieten down as it cokes up inside. Remember your old exhaust was just that, old & coked-up. Having said all that, if it is ridiculously loud then it might be worth getting them to try another.

I was told (it might have been here) the wadding is packed in plastic bags inside the silencer, and the plastic burns off, making the silencer more effective.

Thanks for the replies guys. It hasn't settled down - still the same grunty noise. It's not a noise like it is blowing through a hole - just a louder note from the tail pipe.
I don't know if this is connected but today the Anti Pollution notice and yellow engine warning light are on.
This is a bit of a coincident I think. Can I assume that this is to do with the cat? Maybe they damaged it when the exhaust was installed? Maybe the exhuast is faulty and this has damaged the cat, or it is causing incorrect emmissions to flow through the sensor?
The car did have the anti pollution fault when brand new. At the time I think this was a common fault which was fixed with a software upgrade and a new lambda sensor.
It's due for a service soon with Peugeot. I just know those guys are going to say I need a new cat and it's going cost hundreds to fix :-(
Next move? Hassle the guys who installed the new exhaust or just let Peugeot dealers loose on it and cry at the bill?

Strange - the anti pollution message and yellow engine warning have gone this morning. Probably just a glitch.
BTW. Just booked in a service with Peugeot main dealer: there is a two week waiting list.
I mentioned the engine warning light and the service droid said "ahh, I can book you in for diagnostic test instead." but that has a three week waiting list. What the heck!

Is it a genuine Peugeot silencer or a copy? Copies rarely silence as good as the genuine article. It's one reason that copies are cheaper in the short term.
|
It was fitted by Hi Q so I doubt it was a genuine peugeot part.
Cost was £149 inc usual extras (connectors, old disposal etc.) Approx £60 for rear silencer and £90 for central pipe.

That's the reason the new exhaust is noisier.

How long since it was fitted? It will take time to soot/carbonise up.
|
It was fitted three weeks ago. Must have done about 200 miles since then.
The note is still the same volume.

Hardly suprising! It will take more than 200 miles to soot/carbonise up. If you're still not satisfied, then go back to the garage.

I'm going through pretty much exactly the same experience right now with my 307 xsi. I gave it a couple of hundered miles to soot up - the garage said it would take about 10 (!).
They then replaced the mid section (which I was a bit sceptical about anyway, since I understand the back box does the bulk of the silencing), but that hasn't improved anything and they're now changing the back box (which I'm a bit more hopeful about).
I guess if that doesn't improve things i'll just have to put a few more miles on the clock and see how it goes.. Gives me some hope that people are saying it takes more than a couple of hundred miles to soot up...
I'd be interested to hear if anyone who's had a new main dealer one fitted has noticed the same noise increase.
