Hi all,
I have just changed to a MK 5 Tdi and there is no AM reception whatsoever on the radio which is very frustrating when wanting to listen to the footie.
As there is no visible ariel on the car - except a little thing stuck on the rear screen which looks like a mobile phone ariel - I really don't know where to start.
Any suggestions?

Couldn't figure out the poor reception of the factory-fitted Sony in my VR6 for years, and neither could a specialist fitter. Sold the car to a friend who changed the unit to upgrade it, and problem solved. But your problem probably has a solution as cheap and easy as I was looking for, and I can only suggest that you drop into a car-electronics specialist and see if they can diagnose it quickly.

I asked the question about my Roomie - someone said that this needs a "live feed" to the aerial. Is this an OE aerial or an aftermarket one ? Mrs P's Golf has a besting aerial (which I toyed with nicking)

I'm not sure whether it's an OE ariel or not but I checked the feed to it from the coax using a multimeter and it was dead. Maybe that's the problem then?

I have the RNS 300 in my golf & there should be an antenna which you attached to black arial thing on the roof. When I picked my car up from the dealer in february, it was in the boot and the dealer put it aside when showing me the car. I picked it up onlyout of curiosity before realising what it was and attached it myself otherwise I would have taken delivery of the car without the antenna. I also have to ask for the CD for the navigator otherwise they would not have given it to me either. Ask your dealer for the antenna as it is not attached on delivery but thrown in the boot along with th emergency triangle ect.

I bought mine 2nd hand so didn't get 1 in the boot either. Like I said though there is 1 stuck on the back window with some coaxial cable going into the roof space so that could be it. there's no voltage going to it though.

Interesting - there is no visible aerial or black box on my 05 MkV Golf, inside or on the roof, and FM and AM work perfectly. I had assumed that the window heating element was the aerial. Are you saying that the black box is for AM reception only, as the OP was complaining of no AM reception, not no reception at all?

My Mk.3 Golf has a bee sting aerial. When I changed the OE head unit to an upmarket Sony I lost all AM reception. I was told the OE head unit had an inbuilt AM aerial amp., and therefore I had to buy a inline AM aerial amp. from VW, this amp. has it's own 12 volt positive feed wire. AM reception is now OK.

my wifes polo needed a booster fitting to the back of the radio with a 12 volt feed to it, a cheap fix

The inline aerial amp. is only there to restore AM reception, it has not effect on FM reception which remains strong. For info, my old BMW 320i uses the heated rear window as the aerial with a aerial amp. mounted on the rear body pillar.

You can run diagnosis on the aerial using the dealer system, or VAG-COM.
The aerial is built into the rear screen, but they were so rubbish, that later/current MkVs have gone back to roof aerials!
