When did LGVs get banned from lane three ? - hec
Hi

Can anyone tell me when it became illegal for lorries to use the third lane of the motorway?

Thanks

Because they are too slow.

Im guessing you don't travel on many two lane motorways much? Try getting stuck behind a wagon trying to overtake another wagon for 10 miles on the M18 (2 lanes). Now imagine all the lanes blocked by overtaking wagons on the M1 :-)

And as for the 10 miles comment, yes it does really happen. I have even once witnessed a Police car with blue lights flashing get caught for a few miles.

Thanks - I know why!!!! ;-)

It is WHEN I'm trying to find out.

Having a 'discussion' with someone. I thought it was mid to late 80's they think it was much earlier.

Googling is getting me nowhere.

I doubt that HGVs ever had use of the third lane; right from the first introduction of 3-lane motorways. [The Preston by-pass of '56?]

Sorry too many beers, saw when as why :-)

Anyway... I believe it was the Road Traffic Act of 1988 which enforced the changes.

No scratch that its rubbish I mean the Motorway Traffic Act (england and wales) 1992

And to think I have to go to work in the morning.

I got my first HGV licence in '74 and it was in force then - I even got the "which lanes of a 3-lane motorway are available" question on my test.

Was the tonnage changed in 1992 then? think I'll shut up now anyway.

I think that tonnage may be the issue. I definitely remember crossing the pennines on the M62 with lorries in all three lanes for mile upon mile.

Also close to the M18, on the Mi souththe slow climb up to the M18 junction.

There's certainly something about it in the 1986 RTA but it doesn't state that it started then and I know they are just changing it to include more vehicles this year.

The M62 may be a special case in having designated "crawler" lanes on it's unique m-way gradients. That would legally reduce it to a 2-lane road and thus the trucks could use the outer lane.

The tonnage limit used to be 3 tons unladen, before it was changed to 7.5 tonnes gross.

Many, many years ago.

Re the M62. The crawler lanes to which you refer only brings one to mind (from memory) which is the one leading up eventually to junction 23 and that has three lanes as well as the crawler lane.

Not only HGV/LCV but all trailers.
