Hi,
Anyone have any sugestions for a high revving engine on a 2005 1.2 16v Clio.

Starts OK but idles at 3000+rpm. Runs OK (apart from 'Idle') and pulls OK

Any suggestions greatfully received.

Throttle bodies and failed wiring looms are common faults; but, given the cost of them, a full check of the throttle control system live-data for things like air leaks and failed coolant sensors is the necessary first step.

Hi Screwloose,

Thanks for the quick response.

Would any of these things cause the engine management light to show?

I guess I'm looking at a trip to the Renault Main dealer (Note correct way of spelling it so as not to trip the swearfilter) to get this carried out?

You may, or may not, get a MIL light coming up; it depends on which, if any, codes are stored. An air leak or coolant temp sensor certainly won't flag a code.

You may be able to find an independent Renault specialist in your area if you ask around. Most garages should at least be able to read the codes.

Did this suddenly just start happening; or was there a reason - battery change etc.?

Hi Screwloose.

Funny you should say that, but yes a new battery was put on at the same time.

It's a friends car. We managed to jump start it last week (it's been stood for a while) but couldn't get the battery to charge (alternator fine - battery U/S). No problems with over revving then.

He got hold of a new battery and tried to fit it, but couldn't get -ve terminal off.

I've been up today, fitted new battery and revving has started.

There's no MIL light on.

It could just need the upper and lower throttle limits re-setting - hopefully. [These temperamental throttle bodies can often die with just one jump-start.]

Try turning the ignition only on and leaving it to sort itself out for 3 minutes; if that doesn't work, then you'll need that Renault specialist.

I gave the throttle body a really good clean, once installed I cleared all the fault on the diagnostic reader, which was about 13 in total!! Potentiometer this, potentiometer that.

There really is no use to home car maintenance without one! I want to say thankyou for this forum culture.
