When my Astra (2.0 tdi 2002) warms up the rev needle drops to zero and it starts idling. A diagnostic check later and one mechanic claims that the fuel pump needs replacing as does the ECU and another says its the ECU and faulty speed sensor.

The total cost of repair (from each mechanic) is about £700 (plus VAT) not to mention the labour. Has anybody had a similar problem and do they know a cheaper method of resolving this?

Grateful for any suggestions on how to deal with this.

What fault codes are coming up? Pumps are a common failure - and there are two ECUs, so be sure which one is being referred to.

Main ECUs will need to be programmed by a dealer, [or someone with very high-level equipment and dealer TIS access.]

the code will proberly be a speed sensor signal error and this is fitted in the fuel pump and is not a serviceable item, get the codes read and report back

Thanks both -I will get the codes and report back.

Apparently fault code is diesel pump solanoid and ecu
Is there anything specific I should be asking for?, i.e some sort of alpha numeric numbering? (I don't have a printout cos I paid somebody to take it into his main dealer garage and do it on the side)

I'll be interested in TB's take on it; but codes never condemn components, only note that they have operated outside set parameters.

It's either a code for a pump function or an ECU one - it can't be both. The exact code number is needed.

Thanks Screwloose. In any event, is this something that's going to cost me in the region of £700 to fix? If it is the ECU (and fuel pump) is there anyway of getting it reconditioned/ repaired. Do you (or anybody else) know where I can get this done at a reasonable price? I'm in Bedfordshire.

>>is this something that's going to cost me in the region of £700 to fix?

You're missing the point of the information Screwloose has given you.

The trouble codes *don't* tell anyone what part to replace/repair, all the trouble code can do is to give a hint about what part of the vehicle's circuits to begin doing some more diagnosis work in.

This diagnosis work might find that an expensive component needs to be replaced, but, it could also find a wiring fault or a corroded connector which costs pence to fix.

In general, anyone who tells you that the fix is going to be £xxx for a particular trouble code is not to be trusted. If they say, after reading trouble code P-----, and checking this circuit, we need to replace this part, and it will cost £xxx, then that's much better.

Number Cruncher, thanks for your advice.

Still no luck with this...

Fault codes are:

P1335;
P1635;
P0725; and
P0400

Everyone seems to think the fuel pump needs replacing. Anybody have any other ideas on what it might be?

Thanks

P1335 Pump control module; crank position signal absent.
P1635 Glow-plug control module; circuit malfunction in the control signal.
P0725 Engine RPM input; circuit malfunction.
P0400 Critical system malfunction. [Poss. EGR-related; but needs the sub-code to ID exactly.]

Before you do anything else; verify, with a scope, that the crank sensor is producing the correct waveform and that it's reaching the main and pump ECUs uncorrupted.

If both ECU feeds and earths haven't already been done [if not; why not?] then they should be verified first. Feed relay faults are not unknown.

I have followed the previous details and whilst I'm unable to offer advice I have had problems with ECU's and have found Igi at Diesel Services in Uxbridge extremely helpful and very reasonable, for what it's worth his number is 01895 270 693 ~ good luck.
