When garages replace parts - welshlad
i was just wondering do garage mechanics get the hump with people if they insist on seeing the old parts replaced on picking their cars up.

the reason i ask is because im thinking of marking things in the engine bay should it need to be repaired i want to be sure that im paying for new parts that have actually made their way into the car and not just as far as the invoice.

am i likely to get an irrate mechanic wanting to do nasty things with a 1" socket wrench should i ask to inspect the parts taken out and replaced?

If you're paying you should get the old parts;if under warranty,no,they go back to the manufacturer.

I always ask for the old filters, plugs, coils etc, I thought that was normal. Don't bother with brake pads though or bigger bits like suspension parts, fans or exhausts.

never had a problem with this.
My indie always shows me the parts he has removed - and points out anything of interest (the pollen filter was filthy on the last service). He doesn't show them to my wife if she picks the car up though :-)
I don't actually want to take any of the bits away with me.

I remember being very surprised when, on collecting my first company car from its first service, there in the passenger footwell was a Ford-badged carrier bag with a collection of brake parts in it! Cortina Mk4, 1.6L - I was very proud of it....

Haven't seen this in years. Not bothered on routine servicing. If it was a clutch, say, I might want a look.

On routine servicing where they look at many of your car every day, how would you know the bits are yours, anyway?

shouldn't be a problem with the mechanic unless he's got something to hide
