My car has just developed a clutch / starter problem, and the problem has been diagnosed as a Dual Mass flywheel failure. To rectify this it requires complete new clutch assembly new dual mass flywheel and possible new starter motor.
My Question:- Can the dual mass flywheel be replaced with a solid flywheel without causing any future problems. These are advertised on e.bay and state never having to replace the flywheel again.
My Car is a Ford Mondeo 2.0 tdci 130 ps 6 speed.
You thoughts please gentlemen

For me, the vital question would be, does the company who supply these solid flywheels provide a warranty for your crankshaft?
By changing the flywheel, you'll change the rotary dynamics of the assembly, and the damper on the crankshaft nose may no longer function correctly. If the torsional vibration increased, fatigue failure of the crankshaft might follow.
The other question is to find out how much rougher the solid flywheel feels - you will probably notice more vibration in the car.

Yes they work perfectly well there are upteen taxis that have had them fitted due to the premature wear on the DM flywheel in some countries the cars are deliverd with a standard flywheel so if its good enough for Ford it should be good enough for you.

Do these cars also come fitted with a different damper on the nose of the crank?

I wouldn't know but the ones that I do know that have been converted have lasted a lot longer than the original DM unit.
|
I should have said "are lasting" as they have yet had to be replaced.

IIRC the ones I've seen on Ebay are specifically quoted as being for the 5 speed version, I've not seen a replacement for the 6 speed.

You can fit a solid flywheel and there wont be that much of a difference, some manufactures do go back to soild flywheels if they have a lot of warranty claims with d/mass flywheels.I have fitted solid flywheels for people as they wanted a cheap job and have no come backs..
