Leyland Daf - 1992 FA45 - Difficulty starting - boumph
Is there anyone out there who understands Leyland Daf lorry engines? I have a '92 FA45, which has rapidly become difficult to start after lying idle for 2 or 3 days. It does not have a cold start facility. Is this indictative of a knackered engine (it has just started to use a little bit of oil), or is there a non return valve on the fuel system that is not working? Both batteries are in perfect condition.

Not familier with this particular vehicle but engines were much simpler in those days. Sounds as though it could be air getting into the fuel system when it has been standing, allowing fuel to flow back to the tank. If it was an engine wear problem, I would expect it to be difficult to start every time it got cold. The easiest way to check is to fit a piece of clear plastic pipe on the fuel line into the pump and watch for bubbles. Air could be getting in at any pipe connection or at the oil filter or primer, if it has one.

Does it have a Bosch injector pump?

If so, the valves in the lift pump, and the seals in the priming pump are prime candidates for allowing air in. To check, try pumping the primer vigourously for a while before trying to start.
