I notice that my present car , an Audi A3 , demonstrates, depending on road surface, highly variable road noise levels. Tyres are :Dunlop SP Sportmax 225/45 ZR17 (standard suspension).
They are quiet(ish) on smooth roads but are very noisy on some B roads. I have never noticed such variation in any other car and having driven many car/tyre combinations (I am an old git ) would like to know of other people's experiences.

I never had any excessive road noise in my A3 - it always wore Pirelli P6000 tyres throughout its life, same dimensions as yours. I would try them or I have had Michelin Pilot Primacys recommended too but never got around to trying them.

Mine has Pirelli P Zero Rosso - same size. As you have identified road noise is more related to the surface then the tyre. On motorways with porous tarmac very little road noise, on other surfaces there is more noise, concrete motorways being the worst.
