1999 1.6 Petrol - Cutting Out - chewymix
My petrol 206 has never liked cold weather in that it used to always start fine but if for the first 10 minutes or so of a drive you'd coast upto a junction the engine would probably cut out, it would restart immediately. More recently though it happens if hot or cold but also if travelling at speed, motorway or example, sometimes it judders as though it half cut out but then resumes as normal.

Also if stuck in traffic the revs will sometimes climb for no real reason and then either settle or the engine will faulter and then cut out. If warm and it cuts out its also getting more difficult to start and taking perhaps 5 seconds on the key to fire. If warm and i stop the engine it starts again fine. Economy is unchanged and recent full service has made no difference. No codes to read from ECU so i am wondering if anyone has any ideas?

thanks

I also have a 1999 206 that seems to have similar but slightly different symptoms. It is sluggish to start when cold but the real problem is when it is slightly warm. Say that it is run for half an hour and then parked for an hour or so. It is nearly impossible to start. Had put in for service and no codes showing up on computer. I am in the process of purchasing OBD cable etc to look at ECU when this problem ocurs. I believe that there is alsorts of problems with OBD complience with these cars even though it has what looks to be an OBD connector. Let me know how you solve your problem and it may give me ideas of where to look.

Thanks

Well sorry its taken a long time to reply but i have only just gotten around to trying to sort this out. Previously no codes show on a diagnostic check but then about a week ago it cut out big time only to refuse to start for about 10 minutes, not ideal when in the centre of London traffic!

In the end i sent the ECU away for testing as i have read about the ECU being spiked from bad coilpacks and causing the sort of problem i was experiencing. The tester could not find anything wrong on the test bench but they advised me that on this particular ECU this is not uncommon even though there is a fault. They sent me a replacement refurbished and unlocked ECU and i fitted this, along with refitting my bougicord coil pack. I hear that if you have the sangem unit then this is what causes the spike in the first place as they break down internally. Seen as i have the bougicord coil pack already then perhaps someone was also thinking along the same lines as to what the cause is.

So far on the only drive i have done the car is much better, starts fine (always has), no hesitation on revs and no random climbing revs in traffic or juddering. Its only been a short drive but so far so good.

thanks

OK its been a while since i had a relacement ECU and i can say that the cutting out issue and stuttering is fixed - IT was a very good investment getting a reprogrammed ECU as 'new' ones cost a fortune.

The only fault now is that occasionally the revs climb to about 2.5k while sat in traffic - it does this perhaps once or twice every 2 weeks or so. Is this possible a dirty idle valve or some other such like?

How can i test this?

thanks
