Hi
I Have a Skoda Fabia 1.9 TD1 52 reg, which loses power after 3 mins & sometimes wont start. A few weeks ago it seemed to go flat as if the turbo had stopped, 2 days later parked it out side a shop came out and it refused to start. Checked fuel getting to filter, checked fuses all ok. Called RAC, busy day turned up 2 hours later it started ok. Since then it's beean more or less ok, but last week it's back to lost power. Fine when 1st started runs ok for about 4 minutes then power goes, odd day it's ok. 3 days ago it was fine and it went to manchester and back ok. 250 miles, would not start next day!! If you try to start it and it won't give it a couple of minutes then it most times will start, best if drivers door open and stand out side and turn the key.
Skoda garage 40 miles away.
Any body got any idea's.

Possibly a relay issue; maybe the lift pump?
Lots of possibilities - does the MIL light come on when it loses power?

Hi Screwloose
Thanks for the reply, Where's the lift pump, when I switch on there's like a grating noise from under the back seat, usually if that's there it starts ok. Again what is the MIL light. I used to be a agricultral fitter many many moons ago, if this Skoda was a David brown or ferguson tractor it would have been going by now. Fist thing it's fine some times about 2800rpm it goes flat.

Don't like the sound of "grating noise" from the lift pump in the tank...
That could fit the fault nicely though; a PD might be able to keep running without it - though maybe not to start.
Have a look for an access bung under the seat and test for a 12v feed to the pump. It'll be the fat wire that isn't brown.

1/ i know this sounds daft has the filter been changed????

Hi Oilgezzer
Thanks for the reply, Yes changed the filter 3 months ago, was thinking about doing it again just to prove it's not that. Don't konw if it's comman rail or not, could'nt find the pump? how do i find out.

sounds like you have a comman rail diesel it wont have a injector pump as such
but a high pressure pump,if you take off the plastic engine sound proof cover trace injector pipes back and if they go to tube like cylinder it's a comman rail, but anyway i agree with others to have a look at the pump in
the fuel tank first which is under the rear seats under a plastic cover, remove pump and check for crap in tank and clean out pump, and check electrical feeds.

A Fabia 1.9TDi is a PD unit-injector engine with a tandem pump on the engine - and, uniquely, a tank-pump too?

Hi Screwloose
Thanks for the info, much appreciated

The Fabia does not have a common rail injection system, it has unit injectors.
