318 - logisitics of driving. - wjh2
Just wondering the logistics of being able to drive an E36 convertible, 318, so only 115bhp. Thats the same power as a Focus 1.6. 20 with 2 years no claims and no convictions whatsoever. Only thing is insurance group 14 - i got a quote for a 90s MX-5 which is of a similar classification and that wasn't too bad....what are the opinions?

Are you looking for kudos? If so then I wouldn't get a 318.

not really - im just a bit of a petrolhead who likes the idea of something that might be a bit of a future classic and wont depreciate like crazy. just seems like an interesting alternative to your average fiesta/focus. but any other suggestions are welcome!

Buy it!

I've had an E36 and an E46, I was 21 when I had the E36 and insurance wasn't too bad, I parted with that car under a bit of a cloud and later got an E46, I loved both of them and would have another Beemer in a heartbeat.

did you have the convertible? been having a look around and thinking that the coupe may be a better bet insurance wise! trying to decide whether or not it would be a good idea to swap a 2004 fiesta 1.25 for one...hmmm...

My E36 was a saloon and the E46 was a coupe.

I'd absolutely love a convertible but sadly the E46 is a wee bit out of my price range at the moment, at least with the engine that I want it is!

I used www.ecarinsurance.co.uk for my first convertible (MG TF) and they were very good, Quinn Direct were great on my coupe but wouldn't touch a convertible I'm afraid :-(

Bloke with an E46 M3 convertible took me round the block a little while back. The flexing of the body made the car pretty creaky/rattly. (Even allowing for the stiff suspension it wouldn't be for me.) The E36 soft-top body is rather less rigid than the E46, so if you can handle that...

hmm. the coupe just doesnt seem as special as the convertible. i can picture a nice summer's day being very enjoyable with the roof off. blue, which model of e46 coupe did you drive? the e36 316 looks like it would be very cheap to insure, would the 318 e46 be considerably more expensive?
