HC Emissions level on MOT - Surrey_Scientist

Just had my 1994 1.6 Corolla MOT'd.

FOr the 2nd year in a row the HC emissions are approx 100ppm, although in previous years they have been down at 18-20ppm.

Any ideas what has made it suddenly jump so much in the last 2 years ?

I dont think it can be running rich as the CO levels are very low.

Is this anything to be concerned about, althogh it it hasn't changed since the one last year ...?

Until somebody more knowledgeable comes along:
This means unburnt fuel is geting in the exhaust. My only experience of this has been exhaust valves not seating due to too tight or non existent gap, or because they're on the way out.

someone else mentionned to me "fuel contamination of oil" - I do a lot of short journeys in the week could this be a cause ?

But surely a long journey would evaporate the fuel out of the oil, seeing as how much more volatile petrol is compared to oil ???

Or burning oil? Past the rings or valve guides???

Oil consumption is negligible - top up once between services.......

Interesting that you say that this has changed over the last two MOTs; [admittedly from an extremely low base] did you fill up at a JET or Total garage last February?
